If not for Republican Governor Lingle, there would be no defunding of the program.

If there were a democrat in the governor’s office, they would simply push for taxing everybody, even those without children, to pay for the program.

Amen!! If Mufi (Honolulu mayor) gets his way and wins over Duke Aiona (Lingle's lt gov, also Republican) next election, you can bet that's what we'll see.

Our friend who criticized Lingle above doesn't apparently know much about the state's legislature which has a veto-proof majority to end all veto-proof majorities. They've even refused to pass bills they previously would have been for just because they didn't want Republican Lingle to get credit for them.

Absolutely correct. People do not understand that Lingle is the first Republican governor in Hawaii in over 50 years!

Governor Lingle did not support the plan. She’s a Republican governor in an overwhelmingly Democratic state. She’s the one CLOSING the program. And she’ll be roundly critized as the ‘evil Republican’ for doing so.

Hawaii is facing extremely serious financial problems. Gov. Lingle has the guts to tell people what they don’t want to hear .... programs have to be cut.
