Palin Makes Pitch to Independents

DOVER, N.H. -- Sen. John McCain's campaign is testing the popularity of his running mate, Sarah Palin, in battleground territories of key states, a shift from her previous charge of rallying the base in conservative enclaves.

Facing slippage in the polls, the Republican ticket has broadened the role of Gov. Palin. This week's schedule has the vice-presidential candidate in a pair of battleground areas of states targeted by the campaign, including independent-heavy New Hampshire and Democrat-leaning Maine.

The campaign is banking on her "cross appeal," one Palin aide said.

To be sure, her main focus remains traveling to heavily Republican areas to hold large-scale rallies in the hopes of spurring grassroots activity. But the campaign is also hoping her Alaska roots and record of fiscal conservatism will appeal in the northern parts of the country. "You're a lot like the people of Alaska," Gov. Palin said to the crowd in Dover, N.H. Wednesday. "We all love good moose hunting."

New Hampshire, with four electoral votes, isn't looking good for Sen. McCain. An average of polls there shows Democratic nominee Barack Obama with a 10-point lead, according to the nonpartisan Real Clear Politics. Democrat John Kerry narrowly won New Hampshire in 2004 and President George W. Bush carried the state in 2000.

The hope for Maine, a solid-blue state both historically and in recent polls, is the division of its four electoral votes. Maine is one of two states (along with Nebraska) that award some of its electoral votes by congressional district. Two are awarded by the popular vote tallies in each congressional district and the other two are determined by the statewide tally. Maine first adopted the system in 1972 and has never before split its electoral votes

Gov. Palin spent Wednesday in New Hampshire,...

LOL!!! "Slippage" in the polls! Gallup has it as a 2 point race and they over sample Democrats by 12.5%! That's called McCain putting a whooping on Obama!

Without the extreme over sampling, McCain/Palin are probably 5% ahead nationally! That ain't "slippage," that's whooping a$$!

Well, I can’t say that Ms. Holmes drools with vitriol, but I do detect a faint, drip, drip, drip, in the background.

...do you believe that voter fraud will/can overcome such a lead?

It just occurred to me that the come back in the polls this week coincided with ACORN being investigated by the FBI.

Maybe the pollsters realize that in their forecast demographics. ;>)

Perhaps she needs a plumber named Joe to fix that leak for her.

What an unbalanced article, “a deep blue state according to..”

Maine is closer in the polls then NH is.

Maine, a solid-blue state

It was blue, back in the 50's.

Blue means "Republican" btw. Red=Commie, Socialist, Labour, 'Liberal' and Demorat. The media done switched colors on us. They can rot. We should use the real colors.

News: I consider this a leading indicator of a major shift. In ny NH town there has been an R next to my name for over 20 years on the voter list. The Obama campaign called my house last night. I havent gottne a lefty call EVER that I can remember. There is a shift afoot - I beleive it. I went to see Palin while she was here and saw it with my own eyes. It aint over til its over. Just ask the Red Sox.

As I said over two weeks ago, they should have had Palin in the SWING states and McCain in the BASE states.

The base is already on board because of Palin and she doesn't need to be preaching to the choir - she needs to be out getting the independents and sane Democrats.

The miscalculation here is that they thought McCain would be the one to appeal to swing voters - wrong. The appeal to swing voters is Palin.

Hmm. I’m also a registered Republican in NH, and two days ago I got the same call from the Obamunist’s campaign.

The fellow asked if there was any way he could convince me to vote for zerObama. I gave him an ear full of reasons while I’ll never vote for socialist scum, and he signed off. I should have strung him along for 10 or 15 minutes, but I was busy at the time.

About a week ago I got a call from some polling place I’d never heard of. After about 5 questions it was pretty clear that it was a push poll on Shaheen’s behalf. The guy stuck it out, but it was really clear that my answers were all “wrong”.

They seem kind of desperate for folks who are supposed to be so far ahead...

"It just occurred to me that the come back in the polls this week coincided with ACORN being investigated by the FBI."

If it was announced that both the FBI and the INS will be monitoring all voting precincts acroos the USA on Vovembe 4th, the Democrats would lose bigtime. No ACORN voter fraud and no illegals voting.
