I went to a fashionable London nightclub on Saturday. Not the sort of sentence I get to write very often, because I enjoy nightclubs less than I enjoy eating wool. But a glamorous friend of mine was there to "do a PA", and she'd invited me and some curious friends along because we wanted to see precisely what "doing a PA" consists of. Turns out doing a public appearance largely entails sitting around drinking free champagne and generally just "being there".

Funny! Strangely, I was reminded of the “Urban Cowboy” era here in the States. I never enjoyed gigging at the clubs that catered to that fad.
I like both types of music, and both have their own types like he is describing. I honestly fear for some of them if they didn’t have some band telling them how to dress and act. They would probably just sit in their rooms afraid to go out because they might not look cool. Of course they don’t realize how much cooler it is to actually be your own person.
The trick is to keep drinking until you’re too smashed to care about the music, but not to the extent were you are drifting in and out of consciousness vomiting into the gutter. It’s a delicate balance...

Most socially awkward people despise clubs, as do those that aesthetically displeasing to the opposite sex. I wonder which one this writer is?

There's some I'd never go back to and a few I've had a blast in.
You could write this same type of article about professional sports events (and people have): when you're at a good football game or something, there's an energy you can tap into - and it can take you over. I personally dislike sports but have been at Seahawks or Mariners games where even I can see that something really cool happened on the field and find myself standing and yelling with everyone else.
But if the game is crappy, or you're surrounded by morons or if you're just not in the mood, you're going to be bored. Clubs are the same.
Anyway, this is just such typical Generation X tripe. Hate on everything you won't be successful doing. I'm not a fan of the club life either, but I don't make the mistake of going to one and standing around with a sourpuss look on my face and criticizing everyone else who seems to be having fun. Why not just go someplace else?
Although, I do have to agree with him on the cell phone photography thing. I've been noticing that a lot lately. What is up with that?
I no longer go to clubs because I feel like an old man (I'm 32) whenever I am there. Nevertheless, you don't see me hating on them. I just don't pay the $30 cover and do something else on a Saturday night.
BTW: If you are wondering why so many of us Xers are bitter, its because we had to put up with our boomer parents running everything, and now we are outnumbered seemingly 3 to 1 by the Yers/Millenials who, like the Xers boomer parents, feel entitled to run everything base on their sheer size.
