Michigan GOPers oppose McCain's pullout In the aftermath of John McCain's decision to pull out of Michigan, Republicans in the state are expressing shock and bewilderment at his move—and aren't willing to cede the state's 17 electoral votes just yet.

This may be a diversion but the Repubs in MI are not giving up. Donate to help raise money to put MI back in play.

Send Sarah and Todd to WS, MN and MI. They can win all three states and also turn Iowa. Donate and volunteer now. We need to get to work.

Dems Think McCain Pullout of MI is a Diversion

Isn’t that one of many reasons why they are called Dims?

I think Sarah should go there too, I think she has what it takes to pull it to our side and she definitely seems ready to go.

If you would like to be added or dropped from the Michigan ping list, please freepmail me.

One thing I've been thinking about this "pullout"--dems, especially urban dems, are remarkably lazy. They latch onto any excuse in the world not to get off the sofa and cast a vote. Upon hearing news of a McCain pullout, many of them probably will decide that Obama has the mitten in the bag, so why go through the trouble of getting dressed, going the few blocks to the polling station, and standing in line for twenty minutes?

Of course, tens of thousands of their dead brethren will still manage to vote this November, so their laziness is justified. JM2C

Sending Sarah to MN would produce just as much here and also would free up John to focus on other close states.

In September a group called Freedom’s Defense Fund launched a small buy of independent anti-Obama ads in Macomb County, Mich., where working-class “Reagan Democrats” are a powerful voting bloc, that attempted to tie Obama to his former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, and indicted Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. Thus far, though, Michigan has yet to see any statewide or well-funded independent effort aimed at tilting the race against either candidate.

...and I think Anuzis might want to take an afternoon to smarten up his resume. The same can be said for the leaders of many county executive committees.

McCain pulled out the same day Obama had a big rally there. It just seemed like a bad move, especially to announce it the same day as the VP debate.

Hell yes send Sarah in there. A three day bus tour just might gin up some excitement, put the spotlight on her, and give us a fighting spirit.

I want to see some fight in McCain again. I want to see it in his eyes like when Sarah strode out for the debate. Poll schmolls; they will tighten; I'll feel better when McCain looks ready to rumble.

“Among whites, I still think he is lagging among older white men without a college education, but everyone else, including independent women, [is] moving toward Obama,” EPIC-MRA president Bernie Porn. “

I might have changed my last name....

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson -
“Maybe he’s not as quick on the draw as everyone would want him to be,
but Obama’s given him many opportunities to respond and knock it out of the park,” he said.
“I don’t know how the hell [the economic crisis] got laid off on Republicans,” he said.
“McCain just wasn’t up to the task for some reason.”

This sense of frustration is everywhere.
I think McCain is up to the task, but,
it seems he has that GHW Bush, Bob Dole mentality or naivete that makes them pull their punches out of a misplaced sense of honor.
McCain treats Obama with the same respect he gives Joe Lieberman.
The rose colored glasses must come off, along with the gloves if he wants to win.
And don’t freaking run..if you don’t want to win.

...that attempted to tie Obama to his former pastor, Jeremiah Wright...

How dare they "attempt to tie" him to his own pastor with whom he was closely associated for over twenty years?? The nerve! ..Gotta love the blatant yahoo *news* bias!

I'm dimayed that McCain is pulling out, but I still have hope our state can become a red state this year. There are many voters who are still uninformed about the real Obama. In Kalamazoo, the Obama signs and t-shirts are overwhelming. But I just know the majority of those possesing such paraphenalia have no idea what they are truly supporting.

No thanks. I don't want to go back to pictures of small venues with only 25% turnout.

“And don’t freaking run.. if you don’t want to win.”

Quote of the Week. Attention McCain.

I don’t usually like the term “freaking” as it sounds naughty, although I know it isn’t. -Decency is fine, but country club naivete gets you beat. Obamassiah is a communist, and we can’t “work” with him.

I hadn’t thought of the negative ad angle to this. McCain pulls out, then the 3rd party ads fly through the state with very negative ads and McCain can say “hey, we pulled out of MI”..then if the polls turn, McCain/Palin can make a push in the last 2 weeks. It also shifts ground forces to other states.

Interesting.

Are these the same Dems that thought their Congressional victory in ‘06 was a Karl Rove plot? Just curious.

I suspect it is a diversion. Why would you seriously make the decision to withdraw from a close state immediately BEFORE an event that could bring you back into it? If McCain seriously planned on conceding Michigan, you’d expect him to do it Friday (the day you ALWAYS release bad news... unless you are Obama, then you hide it Saturday at 3am...). Waiting a day wouldn’t really cost any resources (it’s not like this is a video game and these sorts of decisions have an instantaneous impact) and would let the campaign see if the VP debate would have any impact.

I interpret the move into Maine, though, to mean McCain is bullish on NH.

That is a very interesting theory, but I think there is a dose of reality involved as well. Michigan is blue state. The Detroit vote alone can wipe out the rest of the state and that doesn’t also factor in the heavy union presence throughout the state and the large number of college towns. It’s a daunting task to overcome for any Repblican, even with just how bad things have gone under the Democrats. No Republican since Engler or Abraham in the late 90’s have won statewide. McCain also has taken a few positions against the auto industry crowd that have hurt him. I think Michigan might become more of a target going forward as things get worse and more residents flee to other states, but right now I just don’t think it’s a smart investment for McCain’s resources. Ohio, Wisconsin, and Minnesota are much better targets, in my opinion. People tend to forget that Bush lost Wisconsin by only 11,000 votes in 2004 (out of nearly 3 million votes cast) and by only 5,000 votes in 2000 (out of nearly 2.6 million votes cast). And Ohio could always use more attention. The ball game is over for McCain if he loses Ohio and Florida.
