Ifill: I never told the Commission about the book

The AP has a hidden nugget at the end of its report on the Gwen Ifill controversy. While some have blamed the McCain campaign for agreeing to Ifill as a moderator for tomorrow night’s VP debate while writing a book about “The Age of Barack Obama”, it turns out that Ifill didn’t bother to inform the Commission or the McCain campaign about the book:

The host of PBS’ “Washington Week” and senior correspondent on “The NewsHour” said she did not tell the Commission on Presidential Debates about the book. The commission had no immediate comment when contacted by The Associated Press. A spokeswoman for John McCain’s campaign did not immediately return phone and e-mail messages.

A lie by omission is as much a lie as a lie by commission.

She should recuse herself to avoid any suggestion of bias. Will she?

A truly unbiased person would not be writing a book that celebrates one of the two candidates.

I hope all Freepers have emailed the commission and PBS about this.

Who can doubt that Ifill or her friends at PBS have provided Biden with advance copies of the questions to be asked at the debate?

They obviously did it for Obama in the last debate.

it turns out that Ifill didn’t bother to inform the Commission or the McCain campaign about the book:

Since she did not provide full disclosure about her book Ifil should be disqualified as the moderator of the debate. Then again Dems don't abide by rules and procedures. If this was a Repub the media would be blowing a Cat 5 storm over this... Democrats...thy name is Hypocrite!

Bortz says this book gives Ifill a financial stake in the outcome of the election. Certainly makes for a conflict of interest in being an impartial moderator.

I propose we select Ann Coulter as moderator, so we can say it will be unbiased.

Think Obama/Biden would agree to that?

Well, me either.

Jeez louise, that "nugget" is the whole story!

She did not tell the commission about the book: A conflict of interest.

That should be in the nut graph and headline, not at the end.

It’s not just that, it’s a conflict of interest, her book will sell a lot better if Obama wins.

Even if I thought she had no inherent political bias, there is definitely a potential to want Obama to win for financial gain.

It’s not even about bias, which you can’t prove, but a conflict of interest, which is undeniable.

It will be sweet to see McCain win this election in spite of all of the cheating and bias.

I only wish there were an alternate universe where I could watch the liberals have live with the impact of an Obama victory.(NO! I don’t want to live there! Just watch.)

If Barak does well on election day she’ll make a lot of money in book sales... If he tanks; not so much. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Tell them what? McCain has said TODAY he isn't worried about it.

The MSM are his buddies...right. Ifill wouldn't possibly be biased. At least that is his reasoning.

No stones when dealing with the dems...and no stones when dealing with a biased media. Either that or he is INCREDIBLY naive.

Not only should she be excused, all new questions should be prepared. Can anyone doubt she gave the questions to the object of her affection?

The fact that she willfully withheld this information should be enough to have her replaced.
Jim Lehrer conducted himself very well on Friday night.
He asked the questions and then sat back.
Amazingly, he did not advocate for one side or the other.
Replace Ifil with Lehrer.
Or one of the Muppets.
