CA: Curbing sprawl and global warming at the same time (Arnie signs more ugly law)

SACRAMENTO -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed first-in-the-nation legislation Tuesday that takes the campaign to curb global warming to the streets.

The complex measure includes a series of incentives and penalties aimed at encouraging cities and counties to be more aggressive in enacting land use policies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions linked to global warming.

Sen. Darrell Steinberg, a Sacramento Democrat who carried SB 375, said the measure "will be used as the national framework for fighting sprawl and transforming inevitable growth to smart growth. This is a historic day for California."

The legislation would use up to $12 billion in state-approved transportation monies to encourage local agencies to build homes closer to cities and along transit lines to minimize traffic. It also seeks more in-fill development near jobs.

By signing the measure, Schwarzenegger burnishes his credentials as an international leader in the worldwide drive to curb global warming. Left unchecked, global warming could lead to severe climatic disruptions.

Many builders supported the measure, attracted to its promises of density bonuses, relief from costly environmental reviews and stronger safeguards against litigation.

Nevertheless, some chambers of commerce and transportation agencies opposed the bill, saying it could pre-empt vital roads projects and relinquish to the state important aspects of local planning.

Schwarzenegger, in a statement, dismissed those fears, saying the measure allows for rethinking how communities grow - with attached incentives, such as priority for transit dollars.

"What this will mean is more environmentally friendly communities, more sustainable developments, less time people spend in their cars, more alternative transportation options and neighborhoods we can safely and proudly pass on to future generations," the governor said.

Anyone wanting to be Governor of California has to be a masochist.

How are you possibly going to appease the moonbats while keeping productive citizens and residents from fleeing to somewhere else?

CA: Curbing sprawl and global warming at the same time (Arnie signs more ugly law)

The best way to fight urban sprawl and global warming is to send the illegals back home.

Sending home 20+ million illegals out of a 305 million population will show immediate results.

This is getting ugly. This European first promotes fascism (public-private partnership) and now incipient communism (central planning and leveling).

California's legislature, by itself, is frightening, but add the European oriented experiences of the current executive to this mix and you a have a potent weapon for harm to our state, our form of government and our culture.

The Schwarzenegger experiment needs to end.

Bonds. They are part of the $40 billion dollar borrowing bonanza that Arnie sold to the electorate last year.

An understatement... and overdue.

Just sent this to Governor Stupid. I was in a rush so it is not as polished as I would have preferred. It won't do any good, of course, but it made me feel a little better.

"You have made another of your classic blunders by signing that Marxist disaster, SB 375, a bill that is only supported by socialists, communists, and other purveyors of the global warming ("globaloney") nonsense most recently disputed by 31,000 scientists. Central planning is a communist concept, one that all true Americans distrust and reject. Apparently, we can't expect an Austrian to be all that familiar with American notions of the proper role of government.

And what gives you the right, Mr. Governor, to take money from Transportation funds, money our state citizens voted for transportation projects, and use it for a totally unrelated social experiment loosely called "curbing urban sprawl". It may, and I emphasize "may", be legal, but it is certainly not honest, ethical or right. The last thing we need is more state government busy bodies concerning themselves with matters that are traditionally under local control.

Since running as a conservative and cleverly masking your european Marxist/socialist tendencies to get elected, you have presided over one disaster after another. From your budget fiasco to this, virtually everything you have done has given us more government rather than less, a larger and more costly state government rather than a less expensive one. Not only have you lied to the voters about being a Republican, you wouldn't even make a decent RINO -- what you are, is a Kennedy democrat, which may play well in Massachussetts, but not in the west.

In short, you are and have been a complete disgrace as the governor of California. You deserve to be recalled. The second I see a recall petition, I will sign it as will the rest of our family.../s/

If this loser had one scintilla of class, he would resign.

Applause! Great stuff! I loved it! Give us more!

I particularly liked this part:

A passionate, compelling critique. Thank you.

More evidence the global warming myth is being used to assault freedom, in this case private property rights.

Don't forget lil' ol' Sean Hannity's role in getting this creep elected.

All these failed liberal ideas now can be blamed on Schwarzenegger and used to help elect a Democrat to the governorship.

Aren't liberal Republicans great?
