Presidential historian: U.S. needs 'leader" (Doris Kearns Goodwin Alert)
The Daily Item (Sunbury PA) ^ | 9/30/08 | Rick Dandes

LEWISBURG (PA)-- Neither President Bush nor Republican presidential nominee John McCain has shown leadership during the financial crisis afflicting the nation, a renowned author and presidential historian visiting the Valley said Tuesday.

The Wall Street bailout crisis has revealed a "sad leadership vacuum in this country," presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin said before giving an address at Bucknell University.

"Here you have the president of the United States in the middle of a crisis and the people were not listening to him in his own party," she said.

"Then, there was McCain, rushing to Washington, hoping I think, to corral his Republicans colleagues, and had he been able to do so, it would have been the perfect exemplar of him claiming that he's experienced in leadership.

"But somehow, there was no following there."

Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, wisely stayed out of it by announcing only his pre-conditions, she said.

"He doesn't yet have the stature to fully lead the Democratic Party," Goodwin said.

The United States, she said, is hungry now for a leader that can make the country move forward again.

"If you could bring Franklin Delano Roosevelt back or Ronald Reagan back," she said, "whatever side of the political spectrum you're on, people would respond. They were truly leaders, able to move the country forward, together and united."

Didn't Doris bang LBJ?

Her little leadership thinks for her big leadership.

Well she did say Obama didn't exhibit any leadership either. She held out Ronald Reagan and Franklin Roosevelt as examples of what she meant by a “leader”.

Hey, have you ever seen a picture of her husband, Richard Goodwin(former JFK aide)? Wow. He is one ugly, fugly dude.

I don’t mind Doris so much because I like her books.

No doubt, though, like a true scholar, she’s a leftie.

I believe LBJ showed up at her room wearing only a cowboy hat and boots. And, while “carrying a full load”, advised her to “stand by and recieve her president.”

I don't know who Doris Kearns is, but I believe she's absolutely right when she states there is no real leadership in either party, or anywhere else. We have some decent 'managers' in government, like Bush, McCain and a few others, but being able to lead is different than being able to manage. During good times management is fine, during wartime or catastrophic financial times leadership is what gives the people confidence, and we lack that now. It honestly seems to me that it's become 'every man for himself' in America, people seem lost or confused.

What really makes our times scarey is that while John McCain is the far better man for the job, Obama's youth and oratorical skills, (as concocted in the mass media), make him the more appealing candidate for the illiterates, the naive and the dupes out there, who seem to be legion. If he takes the White House with his gang of criminals, socialists and racists, he will make the Clinton Administration look like right wingers.

LOL MONEY is the Peoples business not the Presidents... Money is appropriated by the Congress. Congress is an ardent failure under the leadership of Pelousy and Rotten Reid. There is your lack of leadership. Democrats in charge of Congres...

Hey where is that cartoon from prior to the 06 election that showed the guy in diner with a newspaper front page read.... Record Home Ownership, Record Stock Market, no terror attacks on American in 5 years and a goofy Democrat sitting next to him with a CHANGE button saying I’m voting for change...

That is almost a prophetic cartoon and deserves recirc.

I guess “historians” like Doris Kerns-Goodwin only possess hindsight. Her partisan blinders prevent her from evaluating events in real-time. Since we don’t know what shape the bailout will take, we can’t yet say which candidate was the wiser in handling the situation. Everything is in flux.

The United States, she said, is hungry now for a leader Fuehrer that can make the country move forward again.

A simple translation reveals her true intent.
