Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma’s funeral today
The funeral of Delhi Police Special Cell inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, who succumbed last evening to bullet injuries received during an encounter in Jamia Nagar, will take place in New Delhi on Saturday.

Sharma led the team that killed two terrorists, who were suspected to be behind the Delhi blasts, and arrested another in the encounter on Friday.

The 43-year-old and seven-gallantry award winner officer received several bullet injuries during the encounter. He was operated upon at the Holy Family Hospital to remove bullets from his body, but succumbed to his injuries. The officer received bullet injuries on his upper abdomen, upper arm, left shoulder and right hip.

Expressing shock over the demise of Sharma, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said, “Sharma was an exceptionally brave officer. He had shown exceptional courage throughout his career and had been decorated with gallantry awards many times. He was an inspiration for our security forces in his life and will continue to inspire them after this demise too. It is officers like your husband who make us all feel confident that our security is in safe hands. Your husband’s passing away is a great loss for our country and society.”

In his separate message, Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal said, “It is a loss to the country and especially to Delhi police. He was very competent officer.”

LK Advani, senior leader of BJP, while condemning the recent upsurge in terror strikes blamed it on the Central Government.

“How long will this process of allowing our brave soldiers and security men to die at the hands of the dastardly assassins, these terrorists continue? Is there going to be an end to this or not? I believe that unless there is a fundamental change in the attitude and approach of those in authority, the political leadership, this is not going to end,” he said.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police Commissioner YS Dadwal said Sharma was a highly decorated police officer and had won seven gallantry medals including a President’s award.
