The U.S. Labor Department said Friday it is investigating possible wage violations by a Maryland-based pool-management firm that abruptly closed last week, leaving hundreds of lifeguards including many European students unpaid.
Kensington-based Century Pool Management provided summertime lifeguards for 600 pools in Maryland, northern Virginia, Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey, according to the company's Web site.

Quick, they must get an immediate government bailout!
I would have thought the outdoor swimming season would have been about over by now in that area, anyway.
Century runs pools in our area. Their pools really are the pits. Sanitation is poor and the discipline that makes a pool run safely and well is completely missing.
Thank you for the Public Service Message of importance. Imagine the lives you could save if you brought this up to your local government and neighbors. If that falls on deaf ears make yourself annoying by filing an official complaint that comes in really handy later if your quarry decide to war on you. That plus some publicity for your side almost always wins the day. Good luck.
A hotel in northern Virginia had a stunningly beautiful Czech lifeguard. She was one of the most appealing women I’ve ever seen. This was a couple years ago.
Would you care to clarify the purpose of that lecture? As far as I’m able to determine, you don’t live in the DC area and have no immediate familiarity with this situation. I do, on both counts.
A few years ago our community contracted with Century to care for the neighborhood’s pool. There was nothing worth filing an official complaint over, but we were displeased with the cleanliness and service they provided, and did not renew the contract. This has been easy to observe at the other facilities they manage in the area. I merely observed that it’s unsurprising Century is in serious legal trouble considering the generally slipshod way they appear to do business.
“Publicity for [my] side”? I have no idea what you’re talking about. It’s unclear that you do, either.
Clarification? Your local government uses an agency that imperils public health while skewing facts when the budget comes up. If that’s worth a few fatalities here and there...that’s up to you. You may demean me all you like but your real problem is with this company you go so far to defend. Fix The Problem. No one wants to see kids of any nationality dying in United States pools when that can be prevented. Pool cleaning is monitored because too many pool owners are slipshod.
And you aren’t the one to ask me for legitimacy. I’ve got seven years here and three years tolerating idiocy before jumping in. Welcome to Free Republic. Your responses are always evaluated and appreciated.
None of the pools under discussion are public pools. They are all privately owned, by neighborhood groups. This has nothing to do with government-owned pools. Local government does send around inspectors each month, and pools must either pass inspection or make changes. Furthermore, there have been no fatalities at any of the pools. So it's unclear where you get this "imperiling public health" premise.
You may demean me all you like but your real problem is with this company you go so far to defend.
No one has demeaned you, and I have not defended the Century company. At all. I'm the one who said their pools are not very clean, remember?
And you arent the one to ask me for legitimacy. Ive got seven years here and three years tolerating idiocy before jumping in.
You may have been on Free Republic for a long time, but how long have you been familiar with the DC metropolitan area? Have you ever gone swimming in a pool managed by Century? What on earth makes you think you know anything about this particular, local matter? I live here, and I do know about it since my community has done business with this firm.
I would not presume to comment on a local problem in the community where you live. Perhaps you should consider taking the same approach.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
Not a personal attack at all and I’m not presuming anything. I’m just surprised that the District of Columbia maintains lower standards for public health than my “flyover” state of Tennessee. Private companies committing such atrocities here either fix themselves pronto or face the music.
Unless they’re Tyson Foods.
