McCain says he'll help Michigan's auto industry

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The state's image as the world's automotive capital can be restored under a John McCain presidency, he said Wednesday at a campaign rally with running mate Sarah Palin.

McCain, who visited a Detroit-area General Motors Corp. plant earlier in the day, pledged his support for a loan package for domestic automakers he'd previously looked at with a skeptical eye.

Several thousand supporters turned out for the latest of McCain's "straight talk town hall meetings" in the Ford Field House at Grand Rapids Community College, an event that last about an hour and 15 minutes.

"The working people of this great state of Michigan are the hardest working, the best skilled, the most productive, the most competitive in the world, and they are the backbone and the foundation of our economy," McCain said.

Earlier, while speaking to about 100 workers at the Orion Township plant in Oakland County where Chevrolet Malibus and Pontiac G6s are produced, McCain said he backed a plan in Congress to give automakers $25 billion in federal loans to help them retool for cleaner cars. He then took a jab at troubles in the nation's financial sector.

"We are not going to leave the workers here in Michigan hung out to dry while we give billions of taxpayer dollars to Wall Street," McCain said during brief remarks to reporters at the plant. "It's time we get our auto industry back on its feet. It's time for a new generation of cars and for loans to build the facilities to make them."

(snip)

Republican U.S. Rep. Candice Miller ... said in a conference call that McCain's comments were a signal to President Bush and Republicans on Capitol Hill that supporting the $25 billion loan program for the domestic automakers is a good idea.

McCain tells Grand Rapids audience economy can be fixed

GRAND RAPIDS -- The auto industry and Wall Street took center stage in the presidential race today when Republican John McCain, after touring a suburban Detroit auto plant, declared in his strongest language so far that he will fight for government loans to help the American auto industry retool.

... He told a crowd of supporters in a question and answer session in downtown Grand Rapids that the economy can be fixed.

... “I’m here to send a message to Washington and Wall Street: We are not going to leave the workers here in Michigan hung out to dry while we give billions in taxpayer dollars to Wall Street,” McCain said. “It is time to get our auto industry back on its feet. It’s time for a new generation of cars and for loans to build the facilities that will make them.”

McCain's for a bailout... its too much to expect him to give up Michigan's electoral votes. I marvel how quickly politicians give up on principle when an election is on the horizon!

Globalism forces either loss of businesses or government subsidizing of them.

I would guess that if republicans can get the democraps to let us drill our own oil then the auto industry would get a jump start from that.

Is there some limit to McCain's generosity with OPM?

They’re having a rough time, also. Bet they’re sure glad on Lloyd Carr is gone.

Globalism forces either loss of businesses or government subsidizing of them.

What it should do is motivate a complete attack and revamp of the laws that make United States industry less competitive. Environmental law, unions, etc.

Of course, we've so dumbed down the electorate that the mushy-middle moderate Wal-Mart mom just can't understand those basic truths.

Now, John, do you actually think the majors are going to build new auto plants in Michigan? And aren’t these the same people you told during the primaries: “the jobs aren’t coming back.”

No - not when you want votes in Michigan. He can always change his mind after the election.

Romney, who won MI, called for $20 billion in subsidies. The money would be spent by a bureaucrat and these programs are perpetuated long after the crisis is resolved.

A loan has to be paid back...in general I’m against corporate welfare and bailouts but we do seem to have a crisis that needs to be patched up.

Our founding fathers correctly envisioned a United States where each nation was treated individually for mutually beneficial trade.

Globalism brings “the Tower of Babel,” instead.

As is being reported, McCain is still calling for subsidies of a sort—tax credits to auto buyers.

That’s in addition to these loans.

Gotta subsidize those electric cars!
(I guess they didn’t learn from the failure of the 1980s)

"We are not going to leave the workers here in Michigan hung out to dry while we give billions of taxpayer dollars to Wall Street," McCain said during brief remarks to reporters at the plant. "It's time we get our auto industry back on its feet. It's time for a new generation of cars and for loans to build the facilities to make them."

Just nine days ago, both McCain and Palin promised in an essay published in The Wall Street Journal that they would "protect taxpayers from more bailouts". And, now, here they are, in favor of forcing taxpayers to bail out U.S. automobile manufacturers that are failing due to corporate screw-ups.

In McCain's America, there is amnesty for illegals and there are bailouts for Big Business, but there is no amnesty for the law-abiding, honest, smart, productive, and hard-working U.S. taxpayer. So, folks, get to work, because the executives of Ford, GM, Chrysler, and countless other U.S. corporations are counting on you for their millions in annual bonuses.

It appears that Socialism for the rich is the new "conservatism."

The new conservatism started with Bush’s ludicrous expanse of welfare and education and thus increased spending.
