Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was in southern California last night, attending a pair of fundraisers in Beverly Hills. In attendance was the usual crop of Hollywood political activists, but also former L.A. Mayor Richard Riordan. He told KPCC’s Special Correspondent Kitty Felde why he’s not supporting fellow Republican John McCain.

Richard Riordan: “We want the best person to be president of the United States, whether they’re Republican or Democrat, and now I think clearly Obama is the best candidate. But I’m still basically a Republican, I’m supporting Republicans in the Senate and Assembly, everywhere else.” Kitty Felde: “Well, it surprises me, Mr. Mayor. When I think about a maverick Republican, yours is the name that comes to mind. It surprises me that you’re not supporting Mr. McCain.” Riordan: “When I was mayor I had dealings with McCain where I didn’t respect him.”

Riordan says McCain never returned his phone calls about an airport matter. The Beverly Hills fundraisers, an outdoor dinner at Greystone Mansion and a concert with Barbra Streisan, were expected to break the one day political fundraising record.

Well, I don't fault anyone for not supporting McCain, but moving to the Obama camp is a sign of severe mental retardation.

Mayor Riordan is suffering from a severe case of dementia.

Write him off. He's no longer a Republican.

Yeah, I love it when people vote against their country’s best interests out of spite for a personal snub. Sign of character.

Riordan says McCain never returned his phone calls about an airport matter.

So let me get this straight - McCain doesn't return some phone calls and that means Riordan will vote for a Marxist? Right..........POS a$$wipe RINO!

Riordan, in my opinion was one of our worst mayors leaving in his wake millions in lawsuits from our most corrupt police force.

There was nothing in his administration that was note worthy.

Riordan was one of the inventors of Governor Arnold.

Riordan is the same kind of Republican David Gergen is. a stealth liberal Democrat.

The Democrats are good for a certain type of rich person who’s better at manipulating the regulatory system for their own benefit than actually working and producing worthwhile stuff.

Was the airport matter an earmark? Sounds like extortion—who needs his support?

This isn’t a surprise for a number of reasons. #1, he was never much of a Republican to begin with. #2, he is suffering from senility (if not dementia) and has been for some time, more than 5 years at least.

When the ‘03 recall was getting started, Ah-nold made a trip to go see Tricky Dick Riordan (Riordan, who had lost the nomination in ‘02), and he was all prepared to back him until he realized Tricky was not playing with a full deck. That’s when he decided he was going to have to run instead. Either way, California got a leftist RINO Governor.

California is not ripe territory for conservatives right now, and hasn’t been for some time. Maybe in a decade or two, things will change for the better.
