Gratitude ... meaning Yemen has been horribly
remiss in hunting/prosecuting/punishing their
gaggle of home-grown young, male, Islamofascist
terrorists. We’re generous, we’re trying to
help frame a productive future for these youths,
but the government doesn’t walk the talk.

Is Yemen a haven for terrorism?
Yes. Yemen, located at the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, is a poor Muslim country with a weak central government, armed tribal groups in outlying areas, and porous borders, which makes it fertile ground for terrorists.
Its government has tried to help the United States after September 11, and the State Department calls Yemen “an important partner in the campaign against terrorism, providing assistance in the military, diplomatic, and financial arenas.”
But experts say that terrorists live in Yemen, sometimes with government approval; Yemen-based corporations are thought to help fund Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda terrorist network; and Yemenis affiliated with al-Qaeda have targeted U.S. interests in Yemen, including the October 2000 bombing of the navy destroyer U.S.S. Cole in the Yemeni port of Aden.

Yemen release of wanted Qaeda militant irks U.S.
SANAA, Feb 27 (Reuters) - The United States has complained to Yemen after the Arab country allowed an al Qaeda suspect on the U.S. list of most wanted militants to walk free from court, U.S. diplomatic sources said on Wednesday.
Jaber Elbaneh, a Yemeni-American thought to be a major figure in the fatal bombing of the U.S. warship Cole in 2000, was among 23 prisoners, including convicted al Qaeda militants, who tunnelled their way out of a Sanaa jail in February 2006.
He turned himself in to the authorities in May 2007.
He had been sentenced in absentia to more than a decade in jail but Yemeni law demands a retrial when someone sentenced in absentia surrenders. The new trial will begin on March 9.
“We are disturbed Jaber Elbaneh is not in prison,” a U.S. diplomatic source said. “We believe it is essential that all nations committed to ending terrorism act decisively to ensure that those convicted of perpetrating terrorist acts are held accountable for the crimes they have committed.”
Yemen said it supported the United States after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, but the ancestral home of Osama bin Laden is still viewed in the West as a haven for Islamic militants.
Dozens of militants are jailed in Yemen for involvement in bombings of Western targets and clashes with the authorities.
Elbaneh is on the list of “Most Wanted Terrorists” in the United States, where he is charged with providing material support to a “terrorist organisation” and conspiring to provide material support to al Qaeda, the U.S. sources said.
The State Department is offering up to $5 million for information leading to his arrest.
Yemen says Elbaneh also helped plan the 2002 attack on the French oil supertanker Limburg off Yemen’s coast.
He is linked to the “Lackawanna Six” and wanted by the FBI. The Lackawanna Six refers to a group of Yemeni-Americans who attended an al Qaeda training camp in Afghanistan in 2001. The cell was named after the men’s home town in New York state.
The 2006 jailbreak embarrassed the government and raised questions among Western allies about Yemen’s security measures, but a Yemeni judicial source said the court decision was legal.
“The release of Jaber Elbaneh on bail is a sound judicial move as he attended the hearing and asked for a copy of the charge sheet so he can defend himself at the March 9 hearing,” the source said.
Al Qaeda in Yemen vowed in January to free its prisoners from the country’s jails to retaliate for the killing of militants by the government of the Arabian Peninsula country.
The U.S. sources said the U.S. ambassador had “expressed the U.S. government’s displeasure to the Yemeni foreign minister”.
The United States asked Yemen to hand over Elbaneh when he was in Yemeni custody in January 2004. He was never extradited, the sources said.

Yemen - State sponsor of terrorism?
Last week, Jabr al-Banah waltzed into a courtroom in Sana’, Yemen, made a brief appearance and departed.
This is outrageous - al-Banah is American citizen wanted by American authorities for terrorist activities - he is one of the so-called “Lackawanna Six.”
Jabr al-Banah is on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorists list - there is a $5 million reward for information leading to al-Banah’s capture.
The total lack of Yemeni government cooperation in American efforts to hold al-Banah accountable calls into question whether or not Yemen is actually a state sponsor of terrorism.
For years, many Middle East specialists - me included - have been critical and skeptical of Yemen’s stated support for America’s “global war on terror.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “SANA’A, Sept.11— According to the Yemeni news website, www.26sep.net, the Yemen and American governments have agreed to establish a centre in Sana’a for the rehabilitation of Yemeni returnees from the United States’ military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
The website quoted a source as saying that the center would be funded by the U.S. government. The source did not reveal the date for opening the center, but declared that it would be set up in the near future.
While Yemen will take on the responsibility of rehabilitating these returnees intellectually and psychologically, the U.S government will fund the center and its facilities technically, said the source.
According to the source, that the rehabilitation program will include classes for the returnees, who will also attend workshops and professional seminars, where they will learn skills to enable them to reintegrate into Yemeni society.
The Yemeni and U.S governments went through tough negotiations in order to come to an agreement to release the Yemeni inmates who now form the biggest fraction of the military prison’s population.”

The U.S. Embassy in Yemen was attacked Sept. 17. Preliminary reports suggest that there was an initial suicide car bomb explosion followed by 15 minutes of heavy gunfire (with the possibility that rockets or mortars were used) after which there were two additional explosions. According to the reports, the attackers came in two separate vehicles and there are a number of casualties.

That said, it is unlikely that the attackers were able to breach the outer perimeter of the compound, given that U.S. embassies in the region are heavily barricaded. Therefore, those killed or wounded are likely locals, particularly security personnel at the gate of the facility.

Just guessing by the way these guys in the picture are dressed, this may be a glimpse of an unseen moment where they are being trained by the best, without sinking ships, we knew that they were seeking lesser countries because they could no longer act where the going was getting tough

The very fact we even have an embassy in Yemen shows just how screwed up Bush foreign policy actually is. What’s it there for?
