Amie Parnes reports that Obama just taped this evening's show with David Letterman, which touched at length on the McCain campaign's accusations that he'd spoken disrespectfully about Sarah Palin.
"Keep in mind, that technically had I meant it this way she would be the lipstick," Obama said. "The policies of John McCain would be the pig."

LETTERMAN: Let me ask you a question here, have you ever actually put lipstick on pig? OBAMA: The answer would be no. But I think it might be fun to try .... This is sorta silly season in politics. Not that there's a non silly season but it gets sillier . It's a common expression in at least illinois. I don't know about in New York City. I don't know what you put lipstick on here. (Silly cringe from Letterman. Laughter from audience) In Illinois, The expression connotes the idea that if you have a bad idea -- in this case I was talking about McCain's economic plans -- calling them 'change,' calling them something different doesn't make them better. Hence lipstick on a pig is still a pig.

LOL, and he just keeps digging deeper. My gosh I can not imagine this man under pressure from a true Enemy.

Am I being to hard on Obama or did he just make matters worse with that statement? It sounds like he is taking an opportunity to slam her by say ‘if I had meant...’
IOW, he thinks that McCain’s VP pick is mere window dressing. Keep digging Senator.
Is he really this big of a fool? Is he going to keep this story going by debating the technicality of his comment?
If the election really were between a pig and Barack Obama... I’d still vote for the pig.
I was saying to my wife that McCain needs to say on the stump: “As regards Senator Obama’s remarks the other day, I utterly reject the insinuation that I wear lipstick.”
From what I have understand McCain/Palin had a rally and from what I understand they did not mention piggygate.. This doofus is the one keeping it alive.
Classic Obama. Make a giant gaffe and then rationalize your stupid utterances by making more incendiary remarks.
Anyone remember the time when Obama’s “bitter and clinging” speech appeared on the internet? He went on the stage the next morning and defended his comments until the backlash forced him to retreat.

The whole problem is that Obama’s audience was laughing and made the obvious connection....and he did not dissuade them until AFTER the hoopla about his comment.
That being said, I think Sarah is a big girl and can handle this ...she needs to ignore it and just keep doing what she’s doing. McCain shouldn’t act like the knight in shining armor here...just keep hitting Obama on being an empty suit AND his changes about the surge, etc. Get to the issues and force the issue on this: Obama keeps asking to debate the issues but he has refused to do so.
