RUSSIA today submitted a draft resolution in the UN security council demanding an arms embargo against Georgia and called for an informal council meeting with representatives of South Ossetia and Abkhazia at the UN next month.
"It is in everybody's interest to have an arms embargo against Georgia," Russia's UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said while conceding that some council members, particularly the United States, were likely to oppose the move.
"Strong opposition from some members of the security council, particularly the United States, can be expected. But we believe it was absolutely necessary to make that political statement by introducing this draft resolution," Mr Churkin said.
He said that Georgia "has been arming very aggressively" over the past years, with its military budget jumping from $US18 million ($22.07 million) to $US900 million ($1.1 billion) over the past six years.
"We believe it (the budget) was put to very bad use as they (the Georgians) attacked South Ossetia" last month, Mr Churkin said.
"Proper consequences need to be drawn from that."
He said Moscow believes "some countries are taking active efforts in order to start rearming Georgia and are allocating large sums of money" for that purpose.

Ping.
Translation: “Georgia put up too much of a fight when we invaded. Please take their arms away so we can more easily make Georgia a satellite state again.”
Events over the summer would seem to validate every penny spent on arms, eh Mr. Churkinoff?
I certainly hope so. If "some countries" don't then private parties should.
Get a load of this...
The new definition of chutzpah.
I believe the USA can veto this monstrosity.
Dear General Dynamics, Boeing, Raytheon, Northrup Grumman, and Lockheed Martin,
I would like to order some early Christmas presents for some of my closest friends. Please send the Presidents of Georgia, Latvia, Ukraine, The Czech Republic, Poland, and Moldavia your maximum excess production capacity of advanced military hardware including subs, tanks, fighter aircraft, etc. Make sure they get a lot of the good stuff like TOW’s, Stingers, Patriots, Predators, and those F16D fighters.
Sincerely,
George Bush
P.S. Charge it
The Georgian armed forces were rolled over. They had no chance after the Russians pushed them back and rolled over Gori. All the Georgians could do was pull back to Tbilisi in a mad panic. In the mad panic they left lots of armor and artillery behind. The Russians had limited objectives in Georgia. The taking of Tbilisi and the whole of Georgia was never on the cards. It would have taken hundreds of thousands of troops to occupy and hold Georgia as a satellite state.
Sorry, let me restate that:
“We captured a good chunk of Georgia’s arms, so we don’t want them to be able to rearm before we move to take over the country.”
Just like many knew Hitler wouldn’t stop with the Sudetenland, just like we knew Saddam wasn’t going to stop with Kuwait, I don’t think Putin will stop with that little chunk of land he just got.
Oops...Ivan, you’re too late.
The U.S ambassador should turn his gaze towards Irans ambassador and veto russias idea of an arms embargo in Georgia.
That was a great post. I loved it, thank you!!
They sure don't like to sign anything and actually feel like they have to follow through, do they?
Invasions ideologues: Ultra-nationalists join the Russian mainstream
Stated Duma should read State Duma.
OTOH some good could come of this attempt. The UN used to be the place Communist filth railed against freedom. Then it expanded to Islamofascist pigs doing the same. Now the two forces are allied against everything free and right in the world. Maybe this will get us out of that phony baloney institution and it will collapse in on itself.
3800 troops in each region is a far cry from the original 1500 agreed to in the peace treaty. They sure don't like to sign anything and actually feel like they have to follow through, do they?
Perhaps the kindest thing one could say about these Russians is they are liars. Fortunately, the world sees them for that--except for the sparkling examples of HamAss, Iran, Cuba and Venezuela. Good luck with that role call of supporters, Pooty.
Justa, thank you for that terrific link. I printed it to read over again. It's very clear what they're trying to do and I think we're going to be in a race between their economic system blowing to hell in time for the Russian people to put the skids on these vile barbarians and the barbarians taking more territory and exciting the atavistic slobbering of the people for power and blood.
It's a race we'd better win and/or we'd better put the skids on the barbarians. I hope to God we're rearming the Georgians to the teeth and that we'll stand for the Ukraine as well.
Lasha, I hope more reports come out and more are confirmed of Russian "might" being quite exaggerated.
Another story I heard was some publication in Russia purported to publish an interview of unidentified officer, claiming that Russian army could have been crushed completely if not for special Chechen units (the same appears to be supported by information published on Kavkazcenter) and again, aerial support.
Aerial support is easy to understand. I'm wondering why the special Chechen units were so important to the outcome. We know of their extreme brutality and bestiality, but I'm wondering why the Russian troops couldn't carry the water. Is it because they were less than willing conscripts? Did some of them actually have principles? Are they just poorly trained and not too good while the Georgians were motivated and good? Very interesting to consider.
