Pelosi to meet archbishop for talks on communion By Jackie Kucinich and Ian Swanson Posted: 09/08/08 07:47 PM [ET]

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has accepted an invitation from San Francisco’s archbishop to discuss whether she should continue to receive communion at the Catholic Church in the wake of comments she made about abortion.

San Francisco Archbishop George H. Niederauer requested the meeting after receiving letters and e-mails from “many Catholics” expressing dismay over Pelosi’s remarks that the question of when life begins remained controversial within the church. He said many of those writing questioned whether Pelosi should be able to receive communion.

Pelosi made the remarks in an Aug. 24 interview with “Meet the Press” host Tom Brokaw. In response to Brokaw’s question, “When does life begin?” Pelosi answered, “We don’t know. The point is that it shouldn’t have an impact on the woman’s right to choose.” She went on to say, “I don’t think anyone can tell you when life begins — when human life begins.”

I wonder if that “Catholic guilt” thing will kick in for princess Pelosi.

Pelosi is a lib first and foremost. She wears the Catholic label only as a means to get votes.

It took many letters and e-mails from regular Catholics to get the Archbishop to do something? It’s not like her position is new or has never been outlined by her.

Come on, everyone is welcome at Mass...but she sure as heck shouldn't be a Eucharistic Minister, let alone be taking Communion.

a little one-on-one with Stretch... she's going to get owned.

Stretch, this is what you're going to be taught - again, just so you're prepared... the Catholic cafeteria was/is/always will be CLOSED.

Conservative talk show hosts have been remiss in not inviting prominent Catholic clergy to speak on their shows. Most bishops are very erudite and can actually talk about non-church events, though there are so many Catholic and Christian subjects in the news it would be unusual if they could get around to it.

In fact, they are some of the few guests who would be hard pressed to run out of material. The host would have to be on his good behavior, of course, and it would probably help no end to vett questions first, as answers can get very technical, and the guest would want to be as accurate as possible.

It also opens the door to other high ranking clergy who would want to put in their denomination’s point of view as well. Importantly, it helps reconnect people with their senior clergy and eliminate rumor and misinterpretation of doctrine and policy.

She should not be taking Communion. She is more than welcome to attend Mass and should. No way should she be serving the HOST. The last bit applies to all politicians etc.

Oh, come on. Do you honestly think that SF has an exorcist on staff regardless of canon law?

From the little I know about Archbishop Niederauer I am very nervous about this meeting. I will pray that he supports his fellow Bishops.

I am actually hoping that they question her. And if she gives the same stupid answers the yes they need to excommicate her. if she changes her stance she shoudl be warned and should she revert then again excommunicate. But in the end i do think she needs to opportunity for forgivness and the abliity to change but i am very happy to see them taking these steps because they are spititng on the church when they get up and say such stupid things. Next Joe Biden. Another stuipd one that tried to paint the church as unsure what they think. And the church may of had alot of problems but they have never waivered on life issues.
