When Hollywood Attacks
By Jesse Carey Interactive Media Producer
Just when you thought the Da Vinci Code controversy was wearing off, several more high-profile Hollywood projects are reportedly in the works that will once again challenge some basic Christian precepts.
Johnny Depp is said to be producing and starring in a big-screen adaption of the graphic novel Rex Mundi, which tells the story of descendants of Jesus searching for the Holy Grail. Like Dan Browns best-selling novel and the Da Vinici Code film, the basic plot point revolves around Jesus having children. According to Christianity Today, the movie is an alternate history set in the 1930s in a world where Martin Luther was assassinated, and as a result, the reformation never happened and the inquisition was still highly active. Also like Dan Browns novels, secret societies (in this case the Templar Knights) are said to have a key roll in the film.
In another upcoming graphic novel-turned-action movie, Jenna Dewan is set to play a holy warrior who fights supernatural enemies. In Magdalena, Dewans character is a descendant of Mary Magdalene and Jesus, and is also part of a secret society charged with fighting evil. This is no kids story thoughthe Magdalena comics are dark stories.
Along with similarities in plot (secret societies, fighting evil, the supernatural), both of these films also suggest a proposition that most Christians find incredibility offensivethat Jesus fathered children.

The book Holy Blood Holy Grail which was published in the early ‘80’s led me astray for almost 3 decades.
I swallowed that sewage hook, line & sinker.
But fortunately the Heavenly Father didn’t give up on me and I finally came to my senses just shy of 18 months ago.
I pray the same for Johnny Depp and others in Hollywood.
Advent and Lent would not be complete without a Hollywood or History Channel attack /sarc.
Gay marriage - THAT's offensive. Jesus having children is just inaccurate.
Don't look for the highest in quality for all the films, but Amazing Grace was quite good.
In many of his homilies, St. John Chrysostom (c. 385 AD) condemned the pagan theatres and urged Christians to stay away from them. This tends to sound quite prudish to modern ears (mine included) but perhaps he has a point.
I’ve heard of FoxFaith, what I mean is a community of artists & executives who train & support these kinds of films, plays, etc.. The right has been great at creating successful political & intellectual foundations - now its time to focus on the arts. Remember the success of the left has been cultural - which has moved the country further left socially no matter who is in the White House. Despite our political victories, American morality has gradually moved further and further left.
Yes, it's a good idea. Michael Card tried to start a project like that around music. I'm not sure how it has done. I love Michael Card's albums but he's heavily theological and probably doesn't play well everywhere.
I'd love to see a TV series about a pastor. Not one of those rabid pastors who beat their daughters if they wear dresses that expose their socks that the left thinks of. Those don't even exist. Just your average, everyday church pastor who is trying to love his wife, raise his children, lead his flock, and deal with administrative issues - you know - a normal pastor. I'd like to see a manly man as the pastor and a hottie for his wife - Kevin Sorbo and Jeri Ryan come to mind - to just let the world know how faith is really lived out.
'course, there would have to be people who understand Christianity and Church life writing the scripts.
The 2 hour premiere could deal with a homosexual couple who wants to attend the Church. The pastor finds out they really are seeking God, not just trying to use a Church to justify their sin. He then starts wrestling with the issue of the Church being a place for repentance but not all members are aware of their sin or their need to repent.
I think it could be a compelling drama.
Didn’t they already do that? It was called “7th Heaven” and was on for years.
I didn’t watch very many episodes but found it very strange that in a show supposedly about Christians the episodes I did see, I NEVER saw or heard them pray.
I will admit to never having seen the show, but this comment indicates it probably was not what I was thinking of.
There was a lot of yacking.
A lot of poking their nose into other people's business.
And a lot of histrionics about fairly routine life events.
But no prayer.
Not that I saw.
Let Hollywood try this crap against Islam. They wont of course because they’re little chicken &^its. The potential for fatwas scares them silly.
More movies not to watch.
Hmm, I only hear crickets chirping. What about y'all?
***The book Holy Blood Holy Grail which was published in the early 80s led me astray for almost 3 decades.***
That is the only book I ever bought, read and tossed in the trash. I didn’t even try to sell it to a used book store.
I eventually tossed several others later.
I read the book as well, cover to cover. It is one of the reasons I came back to the Church. It is just not believable based on common sense.
Although one of the great thing that I did get out the book was that it forced you to read the Gospels, investigate history, etc... God is so good that he can bring greater good out of evil.
I get so tired of this garbage. I just finished reading a spy story by Christopher Reichs, a fairly reputable thriller writer. Needless to say, the villains turned out to be ... guess who, the US government, manipulated by those EEEEEVIL CHRISTIANS. Christians are the automatic villains in any modern story or film.
I made it maybe 20% of the way through, increasingly getting more and more disgusted by his absolutely revolting portrayal of the only "Christian" character in the novel. I finally had my fill. I took the receipt and the book back to the Super WalMart and asked for my money back. Though the paperback (obviously) didn't lay flat, they gave me a full refund. I drove straight from there to a Christian bookstore and used the money towards a trio of Frank Peretti's books. Best recreational reading decision I've made in a long time! I will never buy another of King's books nor accept one as a gift (assuming the giver still has the receipt).
I wish there was some website that contained warnings posted by Christians for their fellow Christians as to which movies, books, TV documentaries, etc, contain anti-Christian messages, along with a few details as to how severe it is. Then we can avoid them altogether. Or better yet, watch an objectionable TV show all the way through, taking notes on the advertisers, and contact them all later explaining why you will no longer buy their products.
