Congressman Ron Paul will make a major announcement next week in Washington D.C. at the National Press Club.
Both Bob Barr and Chuck Baldwin are expected at the news conference. Barr is the Libertarian presidential nominee and Baldwin is the presidential nominee of the Constitution Party.
Speculation is that that Baldwin and Barr are stepping aside so that Paul can become the nominee of both the Constitution and Libertarian Parties The Montana Constitution Party has removed Chuck Baldwin from the ballot and is putting the ticket of Ron Paul for President and Michael Peroutka on the ballot for Vice-President.
UPDATE: Eric Garris reports: Ron Paul was aware that the party planned to do this, and has said that as long as he can remain passive and silent about the development, and as long as he need not sign any declaration of candidacy, that he does not object.
No, I don’t want Obama to win. I am a Ron Paul supporter, though. I don’t think that Obama means catastrophe, but a Dem is always worse than a Rep. I’m not a big fan of McCain, and McCain treated Ron Paul pretty poorly (no speaking slot at RNC, etc). I am a big fan of Sarah Palin, and her future Presidential prospects will be helped by a victory in November. I think she’ll win the Presidency either way (she’ll be the socon choice win or lose). I was planning on sitting this one out until Palin joined the ticket. I doubt that Paul will be on the ballot in November, but it’s a very big mistake to think that McCain should not work hard to try to get Paul votes, especially in Pennsylvania.
It’s a shame that the Libertarian Party has so little to do with libertarianism.
First, how can he do this and still be a member of the Republican Party. Is he going to renounce his affiliation? Perhaps that is what the announcement is?
I think the rules are probably different in each state as far as balloting, however I also wonder how this is possible within the LP itself. Their nominee is chosen by votes at the national convention, always accompanied by a “None of the above” “candidate” as well. Unless the by-laws have changed since I was a member (possible since it was over 6 years ago now) I don’t see how they can throw out the state delegation’s votes at the convention and replace Barr. If they do this I think the LPs going to have problems that no candidate no matter how “popular” can possibly overcome. I also know that in Colorado there was a rule in regards to candidates needing to be part of the party for a certain amount of time before being put on the ballot as a representative of the party (not sure what the national party says about that currently). Another aspect would be the non-aggression pledge. Not sure if that’s still a requirement or not, but presumably that would be something a lot of Libertarians would be concerned about as well... Can’t remember if there was a requirement. I remember signing the pledge when I joined the party though.
It’s like suicide for the LP to do this, IMHO. I remember how bad things were between candidates and the membership back in 2000 with people protesting and holding meetings separate from the convention itself, etc... Unless a miracle has happend (highly unlikely in any party) there are going to be a lot of people that will not be pleased about this development. I would also imagine that some of those who DIDN’T support Barr in the first place would also be kind of ticked off - not to mention the other candidates.
Has there been a major shake-up in the LP or something? This is all “highly irregular”! LOL Oh, well... I’m glad I’m not part of that party and I don’t have to worry about it! 60 days before the election and they want to change their whole ticket? Let ‘em I say - it’ll only help McCain. 3rd Party voters particularly don’t like being jerked around... And, they especially don’t appreciate not having their votes count! (Yes, I still have somewhat of a soft spot in my heart for the LP — but they have moved so much further left (at least among their members) since 2001, it’s really sad...).
The crowd who went to Obama from Ron Paul really weren't in favor of Ron Paul's victory anyway...they would have hated his conservative platform, and they jumped on for just the anti-war part.
You’re exactly right, IMHO. The people who supported Paul did so not because he was a Republican, but because he is an anti-war libertarian running as a Republican (i.e. major party = hardly any of the hassles with a reg. Libertarian candidate). This will not hurt McCain at all I don’t believe. I think they’ll find that if they (the national party) play games like this some of the hardcore “purist” Libertarians are not going to appreciate it at all. And, some of them - particularly those who are supportive of the WOT (yes, there are some of them out there) will just abandon ship altogether. It seems they keep shooting themselves in the foot. Maybe what some people said back when I was in the LP is true — maybe they really don’t want to win elections after all. I didn’t believe it back then, but this apparent change this close to an election defies logic, IMHO.
The biggest reason I left the party when I did is because so many were starting to lean so far left - especially after 9/11 and the Patriot Act was signed. They started listening to all the “Greenies” and anti-war folks were coming out the woodwork... It’s sad, really.
Why not, he's already given to McCain and Obama. Spread the cash around, George you dirtbag.
Cool, I remember Voltron!
I have to agree. I voted for Paul in the primary (because Hunter, my first choice, was out by then). There are two camps who support Paul- domestic agenda and foreign agenda people. My support stemmed from my small government ideals, and Paul is brilliant on domestic matters. But I know there are other people who support him for different reasons, the war being the most obvious.
Since McCain brought Palin on board, I can now throw my support to the GOP this time. She has a proven record of returning excess tax money to the people, flushing entrenched corruption from the system, and generally shaking things up in world of greasy, selfish political dealmaking- this is the attitude that attracted me to Paul in the first place.
I think Palin will atttract Paul's domestic-egenda supporters, but not his foreign-policy supporters. His candidacy will siphon off leftist support more than conservative support.
I would have to disagree totally on that. Ron Paul strikes me as the only American politician I've ever known who doesn't try to tell us the "lies we want to hear". Paul is a strict literalist when it comes to the Constitution, and many (even "Conservatives") are horrified at that prospect.
However, there is more to being the leader of a nation than being a "strict interpreter", and that's where Paul is lacking. I thin McCain is an infinitely better person to lead the nation. It should be the role of the Ron Paul's to serve as our "national conscious", and not as our chief executive.
Yes,it is possible, and Rep. paul would be a fool to do it.
That poor gecko!
Hmmm, Professor John Gill to join a petulant, former Republican and some other bit player to stage of a revival of “Three Fools Of Wurzberg”.
He got 16% in Pa. because the race had already been decided. The few people I know who voted for him are not going to waste their vote in November. They are going with McCain. He and Ralph Nader will poll about the same number of votes which will make it a wash.
I second the motion!
“THE HOLOCAUST NEVER HAPPENED”?
It worked in 1992... Big ears Perot ate up all of Bush’s votes and the Pervert-in-Chief won with just %43 of the vote. Of course, the evangelicals were not on Bush’s side that year and that will be the big difference in this election cycle.
Ron Paul is a loon and his followers are even loonier, but in the end, they will probably take more votes away from Barry O because Paul is anti-war crusader and the code-pink wacko’s and Cindy Sheehan crowd will surely rally around the loon.
Their former favorite anti-war politician Obama, has pretty much abandoned any talk related to Iraq, or world affairs for that matter, because he lacks the experience to sound credible on those subjects. Oddly enough, that’s why he gained the nomination and now he’s pretending that war is over... LOL
I think he is annoucing that he will be the world’s first craniorectomy patient.
Anti war dope smokers unite for Ronald Ernest Paul.
