Name, please. ROPER? ROPers can be quite illogical . Also arrogant. Asking for directions would not be beyond the possible. The 911 bombers who boarded in Boston almost started a fight in the airport parking lot before beginning their “mission.” It's the presence of the IED that makes me wonder.

People do not believe that fascism is afoot in our country?
Only a Dem with an IED would stop and ask for directions.
All hat and no cattle, thank goodness.
Paging Ron Paul, Bill Ayers, and the Obama Campaign.

Just out of curiosity, what was the probable cause to search his vehicle?

He probably gave permission for the search. Most people do that, even when they’re trying to hide something.

The rifle case was visible. Presumably, that is not a legal way to transport firearms in DC, but I don’t know the laws there.

Just out of curiosity, what was the probable cause to search his vehicle? The punishment for an unreasonable search is that the evidence is excluded. The punishment for failure to stop a terrorist because you are concerned for his constitutional rights is that thousands of Americans can die.
I don't give a $%*@ whether someone is subjected to an unreasonable search if it prevents a terrorist attack. And if the evidence is excluded and we can't use that evidence in trial, then that, my friend is a small price to pay, don't you think?

I don’t think a rifle case on it’s own would be probable cause for a search. El stupido could have said he just bought it, if it looked new, or borrowed it if not. But then he wouldn’t have been el stupido.
‘course, this being DC who knows...

Again, I don’t know DC laws on transporting rifles, so you may be right that this would not be probable cause. As was posted above, the boob probably consented to the search.
All I know for sure is that if we never hear anything about his politics, he was a left-winger. If we do, he’s an Alaskan separatist...

The man stopped to ask police for directions near the Capitol building
As Hillary would say.... “it all depends on the definition of the word “ask.”

He saw the rifle. If you recall, there is a very strict gun policy in D.C. It was the subject of a Scotus ruling just 2 months ago. The city came back with a slightly less restrictive policy.
I’m certain, though, that it prevents rifles being on front seats.

A rifle case is not a rifle.
That said, it could have been a cheap soft-sided case that obviously had a rifle shaped thingy in it...
Thingy is a technical term.

Just out of curiosity, what was the probable cause to search his vehicle? He could have asked to search. Barring that, the officer called for a K-9 unit. If the dog reacts, probable cause.

"All seriousness aside, does possession of a rifle(and the cop had to assume that that was what was in the rifle case)constitute probable cause to search this idiots vehicle?" The legal precedent is thus: a bomb sniffing dog was called to the scene. The dog initially does not search the vehicle, but technically, the air molecules surrounding the vehicle, which are in the public domain. A bomb detector dog's response to the presence of explosives in the area provides the probable cause for a search of the vehicle.
