Palin Asked About Censoring Books With Wasilla Librarian
Boston Herald ^ | 9/4/08 | Rindi White

Posted on 09/04/2008 1:39:26 PM PDT by steve-b

WASILLA -- Back in 1996, when she first became mayor, Sarah Palin asked the city librarian if she would be all right with censoring library books should she be asked to do so.

According to news coverage at the time, the librarian said she would definitely not be all right with it. A few months later, the librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, got a letter from Palin telling her she was going to be fired. The censorship issue was not mentioned as a reason for the firing. The letter just said the new mayor felt Emmons didn’t fully support her and had to go.

Emmons had been city librarian for seven years and was well liked. After a wave of public support for her, Palin relented and let Emmons keep her job....

But if the librarian had placed an intelligent design book in the library, that would have been an ENTIRELY different matter.

Is this like how most high school and college libraries are devoid of Bibles, books by Christian scholars, and books by people like Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, Coulter, Savage and others? Or more like banning books that are meant for children but push a political agenda?

When I told him no he gave me notice.

So to sum up:

No books were banned
No specific books were ever mentioned
A rhetorical question was asked about banning
And the librarian kept her job

End of Story!!!

Summary to save some of you the read: Palin did not ask for any books to be removed. Palin apparently did have some difficult relationships with employees from the era prior to her taking office. Palin did ask what a librarian would do if asked to remove books.

Snarky summary: Reporter goes digging, needs a story to justify expense of travel and food and drink (hic!), publishes article with no harmful facts to Palin but plenty of scare-words.

"I was shocked. Mary Ellen sat up straight and said something along the line of, ’The books in the Wasilla Library collection were selected on the basis of national selection criteria for libraries of this size, and I would absolutely resist all efforts to ban books.’"

The librarian was just doing her job.

Excellent thought! I always have our small town library order any conservative book that I want to read so that others can do the same, otherwise, many good books would never be seen here. Our town is conservative, for the most part, the library admin is totally liberal, go figure.

Professor, her kind of woman doesn’t belong on any committee.
Of course, I shouldn’t tell you this but she advocates dirty books.

Dirty books!

Chaucer!
Rabelais!
Balzac!

And the worst thing
Of course, I shouldn’t tell you this but-
I’ll tell.
The man lived on my street, let me tell.
Stop! I’ll tell.
She made brazen overtures to a man who never had a friend
In this town till she came here.

Oh, yes, that woman made brazen overtures
With a gilt-edged guarantee
She had a golden glint in her eye
And a silver voice with a counterfeit ring
Just melt her down and you’ll reveal
A lump of lead as cold as steel
Here, where a woman’s heart should be!

He left River City the library building
But he left all the books to her
Chaucer!
Rabelais!
Balzac!

The problem with a librarian saying she's against censoring books and other materials is that librarians often do censor what is available to the library patrons.

A school librarian I know shelves inappropriate in the back room. A county librarian will order extra books that support her own belief system, and forget to shelf books that disturb her own sensibilities.

Librarians loathe the concept of book censorship unless it is done by themselves. For after all -- librarians do know best.

Isn’t the American Lib Assn like the NEA and so many other trade groups effectively fronts for extreme liberals?

Taxpayers shouldnt have to pay pay for porn and other borderline material and kids should not be exposed. Hey libs if you want smut or borderline smut go pay for it yourself. I am pro-choice here. This is a fiscal issue. Town is collecting taxes and I am sure there is an elderly person or kid in need somewhere who needs help. Even if they save $500 per year on cutting out that garbage in this small town, that money is put to better use elsewhere. Or oh yeah, just raise taxes instead. It’s screwed priorities like this multiplied by 1,000,000 that is why the budget is so bloated

“Back in 1996, when she first became mayor, Sarah Palin asked the city librarian if she would be all right with censoring library books should she be asked to do so.”

Maybe she was asking to see if the librarian was a Lib book burner that WOULD censor books. As far as I can tell, the statement can be read both ways.

Obama Says A Baby Is A Punishment

Someone needs to inform Neal Cavuto of this fact. He told Tom Delay I believe it was the other day during the DNC, that Obama had not said that having a baby as a child was a punishment, when most of us know that he had. It was just a quick blip when Cavuto said it but bottom line, he was wrong.

The ALA’s stated position on library materials is that ALL materials in a library (including R and NC-17 rated films and all books) should be accessible to all library patrons. The ALA has even worked to instruct kids how to circumvent library “filtering” software.

I’ll bet the banned book on Mohammed child bride doesn’t make this September’s “banned book week” list of banned books.

“I was shocked. Mary Ellen sat up straight and said something along the line of, ’The books in the Wasilla Library collection were selected on the basis of national selection criteria for libraries of this size, and I would absolutely resist all efforts to ban books.’”

I am a librarian. I also resists censoring books, but, this person is lying to themselves if they think they do no censoring. All Librarian censor items. We hold on to items long past their useful lives and discard items that are practically brand new, based on our own judgment. We buy items based on our judgment, not, by rolling dice. By doing that, we censor one idea over another.

This person is of questionable use for a library of any size.

Libraries can “claim” they don’t have the budget to buy books by conservative authors but when donated books are discarded at library “book sales” without any shelving, it is an “editorial” decision by library staff not to include such materials in the public library.

This is so much more important than Obama’s terrorist connections, both foreign and domestic, or Biden’s son and bother’s pending criminal charges.

Much more important than the illegal campaign contributions to Obama from middle eastern terrorist connections.

As much as this upsets me, and at the risk of being flamed, I have to say that if the Bush Administration hadn’t given Clinton and every other Dem a pass on all their BS from the past 2 terms, the Dems would think twice about pulling this crap.
