Alaskans praise 'hockey mom' Palin (nice piece from the BBC)
BBC America ^ | 9/4/08 | Rajesh Mirchandani

The choice of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as Republican presidential hopeful John McCain's running mate has turned the spotlight on her remote state.

The BBC's Rajesh Mirchandani travelled to Mrs Palin's hometown of Wasilla to find out more about her from the people who know her.

"The wheel goes round, the rat comes out, here we go!" the man running a stall at the Alaska state fair shouts. There are whoops and cheers from the crowd.

A horizontal wooden disc starts to spin; it is painted in multi-coloured segments, each with a hole at the outer edge.

The man pulls a cord and a fluffy, covered cage lifts up from the middle of the wheel, revealing a rat. A rather perturbed-looking rat.

This is the rat race. Among the prize-winning vegetables and tractor competitions, it is a favourite of the thousands who come to the fair each year.

People bet on which hole the poor animal will dash into as the wheel spins. Some might call it cruel. Few in Alaska would.

I am sooo looking forward to 2018 or so when the media is stuck in Wasilla during President Palin’s winter vacation, freezing their nads off, and are pining for the good ol’d days in Crawford.

That rat in his story is more productive, and less confused about issues and goals in life, than the mainstream reporters watching it.

I much prefer the image of some of those same snobs being eaten by the neighborhood critters out on the trail. Just cullin’ the herd so to speak!

I think a griz would have to be pretty dang hungry to eat a reporter. We all know what bottom feeders taste like.

Actually, (she said) the press sillies would have to go to the Arctic in order to be bear-dinner. Polar bears don’t hibernate (females den up to deliver their cubs). But grizzlies do. A nice wolverine or a timber wolf might be good, though. Where there’s moose, there’s wolves, we always say. Wasilla’s other name is “Mooseport.”
