Palin's Views On immigration Remain A Mystery
The Hill ^ | 9/3/08 | Jim Snyder

As Republicans and Democrats race to write Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s (R) political biography, one issue remains a mystery: her views on immigration reform.

Democratic opposition researchers were searching databases Wednesday in hopes of uncovering a position that could hurt Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) efforts to cut into Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-Ill.) lead among Hispanic voters, who make up 10 percent of the electorate and a higher percentage in a few key swing states in the West.

But Palin’s record on immigration, as recorded by Nexis and Google, is practically nonexistent, and everyone from bloggers to members of Palin’s own party seemed unsure of her views....

That’s OK. Most of zer0bama’s positions remain well-obscured in partisan pablum.

His accomplishments are even more obscure.

Alaska doesn’t exactly have a big problem with mexicans trying to sneak across the border of Canada.

I am sure, that like most of us, she is perfectly fine with legal immigration. I would hope that she is steadfastly against the invasion of our country.

Then again, maybe this is another reason McCain picked her; she has no public record on the issue.

I can’t see her being nearly as bad as McCain on the issue.

She’s been the official VP candidate for what, 12 hours? Give her a little more time and all your questions will be answered.

I don’t think immigration is something thew RNC or the DNC will elaborate on.

One important factor to keep in mind, is that there is a VERY long international border Alaska shares with a foreign country. So if people wanted to immigrate into Alaska without benefit of papers, it would be not much of a problem to infiltrate under cover of stealth.

Except there is little if any incentive. Any Hispanic that managed to get to the US state that is isolated by water and by the existence of another country through which they would have to pass first, and then, once there, find it difficult to traverse, because of extreme weather conditions, is one determined fellow indeed. It is easier to find employment in most of any of the contiguous 48, than to try to make it to Alaska. People do not go to Alaska on a whim, they go there with an objective in mind. Maybe they are prospecting for gold, or expect to make a living piloting a plane over the bush, or to work in the oil industry, but not for the possibility of being a casual day worker.

I would worry more about Russians arriving in a rowboat from Siberia across the Bering Strait. Or infiltration by persons who have arrived legally in Canada.

Illegal Hispanics are simply not on the radar in Alaska.

No, but Alaska does have a big problem with Samoans and other Pacific Islander immigrants who form their own criminal gangs in places like Anchorage and Fairbanks.

Anchorage to get Mexican consulate: Hispanics make up one of the fastest growing ethnic demographics in the state. Close to 40,000 Hispanics live in Alaska and about half are of Mexican descent, according to estimates from the U.S. Census and the consulate.

DC as usual. Stirring speeches and grass-roots support don’t interest us but policy wonkery does.

well that’s interesting but I’m sure they are all legal and not sneaking illegally across 3 borders to get to Alaska

I wouldn’t be too sure of anything. We have hundreds of thousands of Chinese who get in here illegally.

I found this last Friday in a Draft Sarah Palin for Vice President blog:

Quote below is attributed to Laura Ingraham on her radio program of March 10, 2008..
….So, back to the Veepstakes. Sarah Palin: I like her. (Producer: “Babe”) Well, she is. She’s a beautiful woman, but she’s also a conservative. Her husband, I think is a shrimper? (pause) He’s a fisherman. I’m not kidding you, and they go out and fish on the weekends. He’s a commercial fisherman. I’m telling you, I think that sells. That sells a lot more than “my friends” and comprehensive immigration reform. And she’s not for comprehensive reform, I can tell you that right now. She’s sick to death of this immigration nonsense in the United States."
[Emphasis added]

Too bad those from the Klondike Gold Rush era didn't know how "not much of a problem" it was to get to that part of Canada without having to go through Alaska to get there...

The only reason this has come out today is because the DNC is aware of McCains unpopular position with the RNC base.

During the DNC convention was this an issue?

If we elect Obama Hussein Biden what will we get!
