Ike will now get intermediate advisories, the next one due at 8PM ET. A move to the WSW in the 5 PM observation.

5pm update puts Ike as a Cat 4 in the Keys by Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. Looks like the NHC track has shifted to the west yet again, taking the center over Key West instead of the middle keys like the 11 am update had it.

Keep on shifting, Ike.

I'm in Fort Myers this week, on vacation on Estero Is. Headed to Orlando tomorrow. It's been awhile since I was in a possible strike zone of one of these things since I moved to Indiana a year or so after taking a hit from Fran in eastern NC in 1996.

We have been under a tropical storm warning all day, but so far Hanna has been pretty much a non-event in coastal Georgia. It’s been breezy, and we’ve had a couple of heavy drizzles, but we’ve had much much worse weather in thunderstorms.

Apparently the center has passed now, because the breeze is coming from the northwest.

It’s been clouding up since before noon, and the intermitent sprinkles started about 3. We’ve got a nice steady rain at the moment and the wind has died back a bit from earlier.

I would be jumping for joy if I thought it would stay like it is right now, we NEED the rain, but I know better.

The good news for us in the Keys is, if it keeps shifting south it may go ashore in northeasten Cuba, a bounce off of there and up through the Keys would likely leave it weakened down to a CAT 1 or 2. I’m ready to start taking some action tomorrow with the 5AM advisory if need be. If 11am advisory tomorrow looks bad for us, I’ll send the wife and grandaughter on the way out of here and make a final decision for myself Saturday night or early Sunday am.

Tell me about it, the EURO model has it stalling on the Texas coast for three days, 13,14 and 15th.

Hey, I was thinking the other day that I’d love to see Chincoteague Island (loved that movie as a kid) this fall.

The book is FAR superior to the movie! LOL!

It's beautiful here in the fall.

Is it worth the trip?

I think it is. The first time I came was in 1985, to see the pony swim, almost 20 years after I had first read the book. But I didn't see anything else really (long boring story.) But since we started to look to move here in 2000 and made it in 2003, I've come to really know and appreciate what both islands have to offer.

Do people stay on the island or somewhere else?

The ponies are actually located on Assateague Island and the only accomodations there are if you want to pitch a tent. There are all kinds of accomodations on Chincoteague Island ranging from camp grounds to major hotels.

Can you go see the ponies?

Of course. Both in their natural habitat on Assateague and at a couple of places on Chincoteague, where you can actually get up close and personal with them. Including descendents of the original Misty.

Cool. Yes, I read the book, I read all of Margurite Henry’s books as a kid. (was a big horse nut of course!) I knew the refuge was on Assateague, but didn’t know if you could go over there (do you take a ferry?) That sounds so fun. When is pony penning day?

Thanks, our thinking now is that we may board some people from Key West here if it keeps moving south.

But we are keeping an open mind and there is no way I will stay if we are getting a direct hit from a cat 4 however the eye and surrounding force field is small.

The old timers in Key Largo (they are mostly gone now due to the third world invasion which pushes ever further South) described how it took all the water out of Fla. Bay and then it slowly came back again, really amazing if you know the size of Fla Bay it’s huge.

It’s raining it’s pouring, the old man is snoring...

Satellite television sucks! What’s the latest? Hannah is a wimpy storm. Heavy rain and lots of wind, all sound and fury. Been through worse.

The last (18z) GFS model is starting to follow the Euro trending more south into Cuba then the NW direction.

NHC in the 1700 update said this might be a possibility. Way too early to tell where Ike will end up. Just get prepared (Leave if your coastal south FL/live in the Keys) if you are anywhere in the cone of uncertainty. I live in Tampa, about 200 yards from the Bay, I am splitting if Ike comes close, even if it parallels the coast past Tampa the rain plus the surge the storm causes will be bad.

For anyone living in the Keys remember Donna had around a 13' surge. Not saying Ike will be the same but with these suckers anything can happen (And could happen worse than before).

Getting to Assateague is easy, you drive over a bridge :) It costs $5 for one day trip, but I think it’s $7 for a week pass.

Pony penning day is the last Wednesday of July, the auction is on Thursday, and they swim the remaining ponies back on Friday.
