What Puzzles Chinese People About Governor Sarah Palin

Most of my Chinese friends as is the case with many Americans, know very little about Governor Sarah Palin, John Mcain's choice for running mate in the 2008 Presidential Election. When they do learn more about her, there is one aspect of her life that will undoubtedly catch the attention of many people here. Earlier this year, Governor Palin gave birth to a baby boy despite the fact that doctors told her that he would have Down syndrome. Making the same choice in China is nearly unheard of. If a Chinese mother finds out that her unborn baby is afflicted with a deformity or other abnormality, it is standard procedure to have the baby aborted...

Chinese people are allowed only one baby, and will willingly abort female babies in favor of male babies. I don’t think we need lessons in humanity from the Chinese.

It’s unheard of in China because human rights is anathema to the Chinese culture.

Children in the Chinese culture are property of their parents, their sole purpose in life is to make their parents look good.

It’s not only unheard of in China, it’s unheard of among Liberal Democrats, for whom proper “Prenatal care” for a Down Syndrome baby is to chop the baby into bits while it’s still in its mother’s womb and then suck it out with a vacuum hose.

The government’s one child policy has also produced other perhaps ‘unintended’ negative consequences for disabled children. According to Chinese law, parents who give birth to a handicapped child are eligible to ‘have another try’ at bringing a healthy baby into the world. This policy seems to diminish the value of a disabled person’s life in China as parents rush to have a “better child.”

“People abuse this policy as well,” a Chinese friend explained to me today. “When I was a little girl, my mother asked me to pretend that I was deaf so that the Chinese government would give her the chance to have a son.” While her trick did not work, she says that many others have been successful at faking a disability and obtaining permission to have more children.

Well, that was worth the click-through!

“their sole purpose in life is to make their parents look good.”

Theres a lot to be said for that idea. The Chinese I know and know of are disciplined, lawful, hard-working and ambitious. The statistics show that they are hyper-successful everywhere. There is a lot to learn from winners I think.

They are successful in the US because they are freed from the trapping of their culture. If their culture is so great how come with 1.3 billion of these hard working people in their own country they are a 3rd world nation?

And don’t tell me it’s just because of Communism, they were a backward country even before the communists took over in 1949.

Because some Chinese immigrants live here?

And why do they live here? Because they value freedom and life.

Asians are one of the largest growth demographics for Christianity.

Gov. Palin's husband is 1/2 Eskimo. This will not be overlooked by both Asian-Americans, Native Americans and Hispanics.

As you also must know, in China it is not uncommmon for brothers and sisters to swap their children around to raise the gender of child they wanted. What governor Palin was inaccurately accused of with her latest child, taking her daughter’s child, would not be seen as unusual in China.

Neither is drowning your baby daughter in the rice patties so you can try for a boy....

And Maybe 80% of Down syndrome babies are aborted...

Sounds to me that China needs babies, guns and Jesus!

I'll leave the Jesus part alone and the guns also but with 1.3 Billion people I don't think anything is wrong with a one child per family policy. China has reached a point in their population that we have not reached yet and I hope and pray we never reach 1.3 Billion. Life would be awful in American with that population.

You do realize that large parts of Shanghai was under the control of Britain and foreign powers at the time, and had been for decades by the 1930s, right?

Of course Shanghai looked positively western in that picture. Because it was run by westerners.

And those that forsake having a male to carry the family name forward for a girl push her as soon as they can in the peoples republic gymnastic program in hopes that within 13 years they can illegitimately win an olympic gold medal so that the government will put them in a new home.

Some one should ask the lesbian spearchucking rad feminazi's who are always "Pro Choice" that--to the point there are severe gender imbalances particularly in backwoods areas if they consider the wholesale targetting of fetuses who happen to be FEMALE in India and China (it is a FACT) is a discriminatory choice or not.

I would love to, as Billy Joel would say, watch "the smile run away from their faces".

Actually, China’s situation is a perfect opportunity (though unlucky for the inhabitants) to see exactly how critical a good system of government is.

Taiwan, The Peoples Republic, and Hong Kong all share the same Asian culture and (barring the aboriginal Formosans) the same genetics.

China, the communinst nation, has a per-capita anual GDP of around $5,000.
Taiwan, which has evolved from a military dictatorship (after losing the war that brought the communists to power) into a democratic nation, has a per-capita GDP of around $30,000. And Hong Kong, which was colonozied by those horrible, awful British folk, has a per capita GDP of around $40,000 even after being thrown back to the communists.

If a Chinese mother finds out that her unborn baby is afflicted with a deformity or other abnormality, it is standard procedure to have the baby aborted..

The question here is what sort of test was the decision based upon? Simply blood test or full amniotic fluid test? Both my children were identified with potentially being afflicted with Down's Syndrome with the blood test. My wife, being subjected to high risk pregnancies and I decided not to pursue further testing for fear of risk to our child and took our chances. Is this the same decision that Sarah Palin made? Well, I can relate.

We were fortunate in that both our children turned out happy, healthy, normal but incredibly beautiful. We don't regret not taking the more invasive, dangerous test.
