PLAQUEMINES PARISH PRESIDENT TELLS RESIDENTS TO EVACUATE
September 1, 2008
Plaquemines Parish residents that stayed behind MUST leave now. The East Bank levee is threatening to over top.
The private levee, on the St. Bernard Parish line, is protecting the Braithwaite area and Scarsdale area, from marshland.
All efforts are being made to sandbag the levee. The St. Bernard sheriff has begun sending 2000 sandbags and manpower to help the Plaquemines Parish workers.
The people working on the levees will make their way to the levee by boat.
They just began sandbagging and hope this will prevent the levee from overtopping anymore. They feel confident this will work as long as the water stops rising.
The levee is protecting 125-200 homes in the Braithwaite area and even more in Scarsdale.

That’s one night more than I cooked last week. Although I did prepare the ribs, and the chops for my wife. :) She’s just better at grillin’ than I am.

On scene reports make it sound much, much worse. “Ed” says it looks like a gate of some sort. 50 people working frantically. Water coming in much faster. They just turned their car around in case they have to bug out. Canal leads to marsh leads to GOM. They are sandbagging ... “NO OVERTOPPING, seeping from the bottom. One spot about 50 feet wide that they are trying to patch up.”

Wolf Blitzer cut away from covering levee situation to hear Laura Bush speak. You mean he broke away from another hit piece about Palin? Wolf Blitzer is one of the lowest life forms to ever waste oxygen.

FOX8 has cameras on it now. It looks like a gate for railroad tracks. “8 feet of water on the other side that will come pouring out” WDSU picked up on it now.

Once again, we see WishReporting from the Drive-Bys. The lust for a levee failure is palpable.

Nature making up for the last two (relatively) lackluster years. You call it lackluster. I call it a welcome, luxurious respite.

Disagree, you can see the water and the splashing as the guy tosses in the sandbags. The locals are rightly concerned.

What you see is a concrete “plug” used to seal a gap where railroad tracks go though the levee. Naturally, the plug leaks a bit. From the pictures, I suspect they were concerned the railroad bed area would wash out.
I think they have it handled.

Well, lackluster with regards to level of hurricane activity.
Poor choice of words.

Mayor gets an earful from evacuees
Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover got an earful today from evacuees at one of the shelters in Shreveport.
The evacuees are being housed at a state-sponsored shelter at the old Sam’s Club store on Jewella Avenue. The state leases buildings that can serve as evacuee shelters.
Evacuees crowded around the mayor outside the shelter to complain. Among their grievances were that there were inadequate shower facilities.
Glover said he would fix things. He also sent crews to install a shower at the old Sports Mall on the west side of the city, where they were complaints about the air conditioning and the toilets.

I’m scratching my head . . . Why would a train go through a levee? Isn’t there water on the other side?
