Gordon Brown's tough message to Russia today was overshadowed when Kremlin strongman Vladimir Putin shot a runaway tiger, apparently saving the lives of a group of TV journalists.

On the eve of an emergency Brussels summit over the Georgia crisis, Mr Brown said measures need to be taken to prevent further 'Russian aggression'.

But Mr Putin, intent on proving he is not someone to be messed with, turned action man to fire a tranquiliser dart that rendered the escaped animal helpless.

The extraordinary episode happened during a trip to the far east of Siberia in what was clearly a stunt designed to demonstrate his macho credentials to the Russian people as EU leaders prepared to meet for talks.

Accounts from Moscow suggested that ex-president Mr Putin, a former KGB spy and now prime minister, saved a group of TV journalists from attack after the tigress escaped its harness.

What is more likely is that the crew, who were standing just 15ft away, were in place to capture the 'heroic' shot.
