PAUL, Minn. — Mitt Romney may not be on the GOP ticket, but Utah delegates to the Republican National Convention will no doubt give him a hero's welcome when he visits them at their Monday morning breakfast meeting. "Next to John McCain and Sarah Palin, right now there is not a hotter name at this convention than Mitt Romney," Utah Republican Party Chairman Stan Lockhart told the Deseret News. "The fact we're getting him is pretty spectacular, given the fact he already knows where we stand."
Romney is focusing his attention during the four-day convention that begins Monday in St. Paul on swing states like Michigan and Ohio. But after repeated requests, he's making his first stop in Minnesota the Sofitel Hotel in nearby Bloomington to greet the Utah delegation.
After all, Utah gave him an overwhelming 90 percent of the vote in the state's Feb. 5 GOP presidential primary — and at least $6 million in contributions to his campaign. Romney, the leader of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, like the majority of Utahns, dropped out of the presidential race in late February.
Story continues below He was seen as a top candidate to join McCain on the November ballot as the Arizona senator's running mate. But McCain stunned the political world on Friday by naming Palin, 44, Alaska's youngest ever and first female governor. Romney is set to campaign Sunday with McCain and Palin at a "Road to the Convention Rally" at a baseball stadium outside St. Louis.
On Tuesday, Romney is scheduled to address the convention. His speaking slot has not yet been announced. But as a likely presidential candidate in 2012 if the Republicans fail to keep the White House, Romney is expected to speak in prime time.
While in Minnesota, Romney will also hold fundraisers for congressional candidates, serve a meal in a Salvation Army soup kitchen, speak to the conservative Christian International Democratic Union on "The Future of the Republican Party," and address a meeting of the Republican Governors Association.

I think this is interesting. Even though I am pleased that Palin seems to be a good pick, it makes me feel good to know that Romney is helping McCain. I am also looking forward to seeing him speak at the convention.

I agree, I don’t like the way he has been treated and misaligned by some here on the FreeRepublic. I just think it is a mistake when others try to do the Democrats dirty work. Look how the Democrats are freaking out over Palin. They will freak out over anyone who shows any kind of leadership. Somehow Republicans need to realize this and fight differently instead of being intimidated and doing their work for the Democrats.
Running for Governor wouldn’t be a bad idea. I am glad to see that he is helping McCain and he is putting his money where his mouth is. I don’t see Huck helping McCain, all I see him doing is bad mouthing Mitt. Mitt is ten times the Christian then Huck. Christian is the way a person lives their life, not what they just talk about. Clearly, Huck just talks.
Romney wasnt my first or second choice based on his record/character but surely could have supported him as VP. OTOH, I wouldnt, under any circumstances, have supported Huckster for the same reasons.
Huck was governor for 10 years. There are a lot of people who really love him...there’s a place for him, especially in the south
I just wish there was more opportunity for Fred Thompson.
It’s funny, because Huck made a first good impression, but he sure did get on my bad side the way he went after Romney. At one point I was actually considering voting for Huck. But that lasted for about one day. He speaks with such a forked tounge. He seems like such a Clintonesta. There is something about him that is really off.
Yes, I think Fred Thomspon is a good person. We need to stop attacking our own. I sure don’t like the way some of Fred’s supporters attacked Mitt. We need to stick together and stop letting the Democrats get the best of us.

You’ve got to be joking. Wasn’t his epic fail disaster of a term quite enough for a lifetime ? Thank the Lord that McCain steered clear of this guy and chose competence for the ticket in Gov. Palin. Slick Willard should permanently retire from politics.
I think that is a really mean comment. McCain isn’t steering clear of Romney because they are still working together. Maybe McCain didn’t pick Romney because of people like you who were going to be divisive. Time will be on Romney’s side. He is a good man. I hope Romney helps McCain win and I am looking forward to seeing Romney speak at the convention. If what you said was true, McCain wouldn’t be anywhere near Romney and wouldn’t let him speak at the convention. I am not like you, I can have my favorite pick lose and still support the one who was picked. You need to grow up and stop this pride thing.
I will tell you right now that a real Christian would never be disrepectful to a man like Romney. Real Christians don’t do that. Real Christians have discernment, and understand that yes, even Mormons can be Christian because it is about a personal relationship not which church you attend. In fact, a real Christian doesn’t even have to go to church since it is about a personal relationship anyways.
No, indeed, I am glad my prayers were answered. I prayed that McCain would not be fooled by that leftist charlatan and trojan horse for the Democrats. But what you need to do is let go of this obsessive hate you have for people that knew the obvious truth about Slick Willard, his record and his deceitfulness, and dared to speak up, enduring over a year of vicious attacks and vile garbage from both his paid agents and an unhinged brigade of sycophants. Thanks to us, we probably saved McCain’s butt for November (for good or for bad).
And just so you know, I similarly opposed Huckster for almost the same identical reasons. May those two destructive, phony prima donnas NEVER seek office again under the Republican label. Amen !

I lean towards the latter possibility.
Some people had real concerns for why they wouldn’t support Romney, but many didn’t support him only because he was a Mormon. That’s why he would have won the nomination if he had been a different Christian denomination.
And so should Juan McQueeg.
