New Orleans Will Not Open Shelters for Hurricane Gustav

New Orleans is providing 700 buses to evacuate the elderly, the sick and anyone lacking transportation ahead of Hurricane Gustav. The city is expected to be hit some time early next week and officials are warning they will not open shelters.

Officials are going street to street with bullhorns announcing the decision as a way of reaching all citizens. They will also institute a curfew that will lead to anyone on the street after a mandatory evacuation order being arrested.

Saket Soni of New Orleans Workers' Center for Racial Justice is still concerned, saying "Hundreds if not thousands will fall through the cracks of an evacuation plan, and they will be left in the city, not out of choice but out of necessity."

Then what the hell is your suggestion Saket? Hmmmm! If they don't take advantage of the opportunity to evacuate...then who's fault is that...it's not the government...it's theirs! Oh but wait a minute I forgot personal responsibility has never been very high on your list I'm sure!

After the way they trashed the Superdome, it is wise to not let them in anywhere you don’t want completely messed up and vandalized.

I don’t think Katrina had winds that strong in New Orleans. Most of its strength was on the Alabama and Miss coast.

The significant damage to NO during Katrina was not due to the winds, it was due to the corruption and incompetence. They allowed the levees to be substandard and ensured absolutely no competence from the state and local govt.

Only a total idiot would have moved into (or back into) NOLA WITHOUT a plan/the means to evacuate.

After all, NOLA is only heartbeats away from returning to the Gulf.

But New Orleans may get the winds that the Gulf Coast got last time because at this point in time, the storm is forecast to make landfall just west of them.

“At this point in time, this is a lie.”

Not a lie, but a prediction (”expected”). Also you apparently don’t understand the concept of storm surge and eyewall winds which can extend for considerable distances.

"New Orleans is providing 700 buses to evacuate the elderly"

ahhh...does that include all those waterlogged school buses the mayor ignored during Katrina?

...but, it's Bush's fault...

Yes, the storm is certainly expected to have some influence on NO in a couple days, given the best forecasting info available at this time. No lie. Not reasonable to forecast a direct hit at this stage, however; but then preparation means preparing for the worst possible eventuality, not the best.

You don’t know what I “understand.” You don’t know where I live, do you? If the writer meant “predict,” the writer should have used the word. That’s good writing— strangely lacking in journalism today. The storm is not currently “expected” in NO.

The city is expected to be hit some time early next week and officials are warning they will not open shelters.

That is what they NEED to do...if you give the idiots the option of hanging out with going to a shelter as a last resort, that is EXACTLY what they'll do...stay, go to a shelter, and then loot/pillage if things get bad.

I guarantee you, people that stay behind will do it by choice and they will be EXACTLY the same people that stayed behind during Katrina. Nobody is “falling through the cracks”. These people WANT to suffer because it gives them the victim card.
