Obama's mass VP text message fails to deliver
SF Gate ^ | 8-24-2008 | Joe Garofoli

Over the past few weeks, Barack Obama's campaign encouraged millions of mobile phone users to sign up to receive a text message so they could be "the first to know" who Obama's vice presidential choice was. It was a deft bit of techno-political marketing.

But hours before the text was sent, the campaign's famously tight communications ship sprung a leak. So the first to know that Sen. Joseph Biden would be in Springfield on Saturday were not those who had signed up for a text message, but those who were watching cable television news programs at around 10:45 p.m. PDT Friday or reading news online - when the Associated Press, CNN, ABC.com and others began breaking the story. That's roughly two hours before people started getting their text messages from the campaign.

It looks like the middle-of-the-night call that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton suggested Obama wasn't prepared to handle turned out to be a text message, instead. And some of the people who received it could have waited until morning to hear the news.

On SFGate.com's Politics blog, a commenter posting under the name albanyan98 wrote: "Yeah, I was suckered, heard the news on Nightline last night and at the moment (Sat 11:45 am) still no text message."

The 3:00 am message delivered a message to Hillary supporters.

“Yeah, I was suckered”

He better be prepared to feel more of the same with the “change” candidate’s promises. Obama is more like the circus scammer trying to get people into the tent by promising people peeks of the bearded lady.

Obama has not only shown he is isn’t qualified to take a 3:00 a.m. call, he can’t make one either.

Team Obama tried to make the 3 a.m. call, and they flubbed it.

That could make an effective commercial:
Obama bombs on his first 3-a.m. phone call.

promises, promises, promises. Obama is a sham and a fraud a complete illusion and the scam is being exposed to us that already knew and to some that actually bought the hype initially.

Saturday on the radio the KFI news reporter was talking about the 3 AM text msg - no mention that it was old news by the time of the text. To those who may have been sleeping instead of waiting breathlessly for the text, it would appear that there was never any problem - that the text WAS the big announcement. History gets rewritten or spun fast these days!

The reason I read that the vp pick was released late Friday early Saturday morning was to avoid Rush and the rest of talk radio from immediately pouncing on it. Like somehow Monday the story will be forgotten?

Barack Obama's campaign encouraged millions of mobile phone users to sign up to receive a text message

So now Barack has a few million cell phone numbers of people who have agreed to accept campaign phone calls and text messages. Smart marketing, at least until they annoy potential voters with constant phone and text spam.

Sadly, it will. Pols always release bad news on Friday night. This way, nobody is talking about it over the "watercooler" at work and critics won't get a chance to respond right away. By Monday, it will be old news. And, since the pick is Biden, it will be old, boring news.

And the Friday night release gives the MSM the whole weekend of TV talk shows to fawn over the OB ticket without interruption. gag...

"Yeah, I was suckered, heard the news on Nightline last night and at the moment (Sat 11:45 am) still no text message."

He, and those who signed up, were suckered in more than one way. The article's key phrase: But all the text drama pales to what the Obama campaign gained from the exercise: Now it has a way to contact an estimated 3 million mobile phone users.

That info is priceless to a candidate - and I wonder, priceless to who else? Methinks there is a tidal wave of junk text messages coming.

That was one of the most smug and arrogant things ever done
to one from another in the same party. He NEEDS unity or he loses period. Noone has ever been elected President running in a split party.

He doesn’t have the brains to be President.

It was a glitch in the planning. I assume they meant to make the announcement at 3:00PM after Rush Limbaugh’s broadcast ended, not 3:00AM of the following Saturday.

Yes, I’m sure the cell #s of those who signed up for this flim-flam are, as we read, being deleted from the obama db. What a surprise these folks are in for when the spam calls start about a week before Election Day.

The 3:00 am message delivered a message to Hillary supporters.

Hype the text message with the implied "you'll be among the first to know" and then let all the air out of the balloon just to give a petty "(insert short vulgar command of your choice here)" to Hillary at 3 A.M., when most of the eagerly awaiting masses will be fast asleep? An amazing waste of a promotional event, and ridiculous since they're giving Bill and Hillary each a night at the convention.

Most likely simple incompetence on the part of the Obamessiah's campaign managers.

Did you guys ever think this was anything other than a ploy to try to seem “with it” to a bunch of college-age iPhone-wielding trust-fund-hippies? They just harvested a bunch of numbers to sic their annoying campaign teams on around election time.

Of course, anyone dim enough to willingly sign up for telemarketing of the worst kind (even the annoying insurance hawkers and such are at least offering something of value that required effort to produce) is obviously already voting for the socialist, so the net gain seems minimal.
