Young evangelical backs out of convention prayer By ERIC GORSKI,AP Posted: 2008-08-22 04:32:07 DENVER (AP) - It was a coup for Democrats: An emerging young evangelical voice, a registered Republican no less, accepted their invitation to deliver a prayer at next week's Democratic National Convention.

But Cameron Strang, the 32-year-old editor of edgy and hip Relevant Magazine, had second thoughts and pulled out of delivering the benediction on the convention's first night, Monday. Citing fears that his bridge-building gesture would be wrongly construed as an endorsement, Strang said he instead hopes to take a lower-profile role, participating in a convention caucus meeting on religion later in the week.

Can evangelicals be threatened with ex-communication?

Regardless, I guess he got the message.

I don’t know how you can ask God to bless the party of abortion and sodomy.

I wonder if Obama’s Saddleback appearance, along with his lying about voting (3 times) to kill babies born live from botched abortions had anything to do with this guy changing his mind.

Unfortunately, Strang also left the Republican Party and the Left’s message is having an effect on young Christians:

I’m an evangelical, and I would totally do this if they asked me. They might not like my prayer though...

"It wouldn't be wise for me to be seen as picking a political side when I've consistently said both sides are right in some areas and wrong in some areas."

Wrong, Pastor. Democrats are not right in any areas.

"this generation of values voters doesn't necessarily need to draw political battle lines the way previous generations have, and that we can work through areas of disagreement toward common goals." Those goals range from fighting poverty, torture and genocide to protecting the environment and reducing the number of abortions, he wrote.

Sounds like typical liberal goals. Even on the last point, I have never heard a politician or anyone in the public eye say they're NOT for reducing the number of abortions.

a registered Republican no less

My last girlfriend told me she was a registered Republican. Found out she was a big Keith Olbermann fan, and I know for a fact she's voting for Obama this time around. One of the many reasons she's an ex. Words and party registrations don't mean much. Sounds like Pastor Strang really wanted to give the prayer at the DNC and probably got told an emphatic "no" by the people he's supposed to represent.

Evangelical has become as meaningless a term as Christian. To a great degree neither one is any longer associated strictly with a Biblical worldview, rather individuals insert their own beliefs or pet causes and attempt to identify those areas as being uniquely Evangelical or Christian. Strang sounds very hip with a thin veneer of Christianity smeared over his distinctly unbiblical worldview packaged to deceive even the elect, were that possible.

Yes, even Barry Soetoro can be identified as an Evangelical in todays limits; he cited Matthew 25:40 to show he’s ‘down for the struggle’ on social justice ... of course, his protecting the killing-by-neglect for born alive infants surviving abortion attempt must be ignored when counting the brethren he would help. Such a good boy ...

“I’m an evangelical, and I would totally do this if they asked me. They might not like my prayer though...”

Lol, you should try and get that gig. I hope you’re a fast prayer. I have a feeling your convention debut might not last long.

This is a story? Hell, Lincoln Chaffee was also a “registered republican”.

But Cameron Strang, the 32-year-old editor of edgy and hip Relevant Magazine...

Yeah, he's about as "edgy and hip" as my grandmother.

I read his article about why he turned it down. I'd say "soft center" describes both his political ideology and the inside of his brain.
