VP Alert (McCain Camp Now ACTIVELY Calling Leaders on Possibility of Selling Pro-Choice Pick)
National Review ^ | 8-19-08 | Rich Lowry

Posted on 08/19/2008 7:49:51 AM PDT by TitansAFC

NR has learned that the McCain campaign has been calling key state GOP officials around the country the last couple of days and sounding them out about the consequences of a pro-choice VP pick. The campaign is asking about the reaction of conservative grass-roots activists to such a pick and whether a pro-choicer can be sold to them. This is an indication that the McCain campaign is serious about the possibility of a pro-choice VP nominee and that McCain leaving the door open to Tom Ridge last week may not have been merely a friendly nod to a longtime supporter. In this scenario, McCain's emphatic pro-life statements Saturday night and his pledge that he'll run a "pro-life administration" would have been partly an attempt to reassure conservatives in the event of a pro-choice pick. Here is NR's take today on why going with a pro-choicer would be a mistake for McCain.

Tom Ridge is lame. If he goes pro-choice it had better be somebody high profile.

So, coming off a performance that injected a little much needed enthusiasm into his campaign, McCain now wishes to offset this by choosing a pro-choice VP. I don't get it. Actually, I get it loud and clear. McCain hates conservatives and believes he needs to do whatever it takes to demonstrate to them he will win without them and to banish them to the political dungeon. One step forward; One thousand steps back.

This is one of the few things that could keep me from voting for McCain.

Advice to McCain, pick a pro-infanticide running mate when Obama picks his pro-life running mate.

Why does he even lean toward Ridge? Even if Ridge were pro-life, he is a has-been who brings nothing to the ticket.

NR has learned that

Source please. More hysteric bullcrap.

The campaign is asking about the reaction of conservative grass-roots activists to such a pick

I won't vote for such a ticket. Period.

This is getting ridiculous.

Ridge and Co. would sink McCain. At Saddleback McCain promised us that his presidency will be pro-Life and the policies pursued will be pro-Life. He repeated clearly that this is his commitment to us.

Why would he RUIN his top performance on Saturday with this?? Maybe the media is making this up? This just does not make sense.

Why, after the performance at Saddleback and his apparent decisiveness on the pro-life issue, is McCain so hell-bent on screwing things up by choosing a pro-choice candidate?

If he thinks he can pick up PA by selecting Ridge, he’s delusional.

I won't believe it until it happens and I more suspect this is a dem trick to demoralize the base- HOWEVER, this is a good opportunity to remind everyone to call and put as much pressure on party leaders as possible. Let McCain know how much support he will lose with the wrong pick.

You see the article yesterday, from National Review I think, saying with Ridge it’s not ONLY abortion? Says this guy, who is supposed to be so strong on defense, was a supporter of the “nuclear freeze” back when he was in the House. So for McCain to pick him it would be bad on more than one level. He’d better go with someone else. Ridge doesn’t even guarantee a win in PA.

This would be a big mistake. It wouldn't buy him anything, and it would lose him some pro-life support.

He needs to pick someone non-controversial. A pro-life midwesterner would be good.

I've never read anywhere that McCain was smart. In fact, I read just the opposite.

Saddleback Civil Forum:

MCCAIN: At the moment of conception. I have a 25-year pro-life record in the Congress, in the Senate. And as president of the United States, I will be a pro-life president. And this presidency will have pro-life policies. That’s my commitment. That’s my commitment to you.

If he breaks this promise, FORGET it.

Regardless of the abortion issue Ridge is a weak choice. Probably a very good man, a war hero I believe but he got a bad rep after Homeland Security. Sadly, his hearing problem makes him come off a bit odd, unfair as that is.

I think Lieberman is the real possibility.
