I guess you could take their money and then vote for whoever you want. It seems to me that people who first say no then get the money to register - probably are not likely to vote anyway. Still if Obama is as fantastic as all the news headlines say he is, why be this desperate?

The Dems have been doing this in the cities for decades. They pick up “street voters” in vans to “just drive them to he polls” ya know. That they may hand out cigarettes or coffee or bus and subway tokens is incidental and really doesn;t mean anything....... sarc/

Eli Rosenthal has volunteered for the DNC and has no problem with offering people money to register to vote. "In Australia there's a $75 fine if you don't vote so democracy is what you make of it. So that puts it in perspective," he said.

I see. A punative fine is morally equivalent to paying people to vote some of the time. < /s >

You are absolutely right. In some places in the rural south, you exit the polling place, and walk right into the trailer where you pick up your bottle of booze if you vote Democrat. A number of years back, NBC News even did a story on this, with video of the people walking away drinking out of their bottles.

I like Australia’s method better. You don’t vote, you get fined.

Actually, I'd prefer that people have to pass a basic civics test before they can vote. Nothing to fancy or difficult. But they should at least know the name of the current President and Vice President and be able to answer some basic questions about the positions of the current candidates.

It sounds more like Sadam Hussein's method. Remember when he held elections? He had 100% turnout, and he received 100% of the votes. Imagine that.

Actually, I’m leaning more towards a system like in the movie Starship Troopers where there are two classes of people. Civilians and Citizens. If you serve in the armed forces you become a citizen and get to vote. Otherwise your just a civilian and have no say at the polls. I would include services like the police and border patrol as qualifying you for citizenship. I think that one of our main problems is that we have become a society where everyone has rights but few understand or are willing to take on the responsibilities that go along with those rights.

That system gave the vote to anyone in public service, which included anyone working for the government. And you only got the vote after you were no longer employed in such service.

I see no problem with this.

Register, take the money, and when it’s time to vote, vote Republican.
