McCain's 'celebrity' taunts are bugging Obama
The Glens Falls Post-Star ^ | August 11, 2008 | Charles Babington and Ann Sanner

HARRISBURG, Pa. - In a presidential campaign freighted with war, recession and energy woes, a jibe featuring Paris Hilton, of all things, seems to have struck a nerve in Democrat Barack Obama. For the second time in two weeks, he aired a TV ad Monday rebutting Republican John McCain's claim that Obama is little more than a celebrity, like the blonde hotel heiress.

The first time, Obama dismissed the assertion as "baloney." On Monday, Obama took a different tack with a commercial that says McCain, not he, is "Washington's biggest celebrity."

The back-and-forth may seem as frothy as a boardwalk milkshake in mid-August. But it suggests McCain is making some headway in trying to fight the campaign on his terms.

For weeks, Obama has tried to frame the election largely as a referendum on President Bush, using every chance to tie McCain to the unpopular incumbent. McCain has tried to make it about Obama by arousing concerns about the first-term senator's experience and depth.

McCain has aired a series of TV ads that showed far more images of Obama than himself, a somewhat risky approach. All of them tried to turn Obama's crowd-pleasing talents against him.

A July commercial blaming Obama for high gasoline prices _ which the watchdog group FactCheck.org called "a tank full of nonsense" _ portrayed crowds chanting Obama's name. A subsequent ad mixed images of Obama on his recent European trip with video clips of pop figures Hilton and Britney Spears.

Obama is "the biggest celebrity in the world," the announcer said. "But is he ready to lead?"

Rookie mistake. Don't be reactive, always stay on message and on the attack.

Nice to see the McCain campaign getting its act together.

I saw Obama’s “McCain is a celebrity” commercial on FoxNews. All I can say is that the Obama folks can’t think for themselves. They are just parrotting everything McCain says. McCain does a “celebrity” commercial. Then Obama does a “celebrity” commercial. When McCain did it, it was an original idea. When Obama did it, it was a copycat.

They should run an ad mocking writing two books about himself.

He worships himself.

The man who invites 'celebrity' comparisons - as he does 'race comparisons' - gets annoyed when someone else does the same. It's tough being a Candidate for Prez. . .can only imagine what Obama might find 'tough' about BEING President.

This man is on a 'power trip' nothing more; and will get burned badly. . .as will we, if he should be elected and those hot 'reigns of power' of his to hold.

Libs are very peculiar creatures. You can call them commies, America haters and baby killers. The truth phases them not a bit. But make fun of them and they go nuts. It is an amazing thing to watch. Especially considering that a lib’s idea of making fun of a pubbie is usually something disgustingly hateful and often in very poor taste.

Obama is more thin-skinned than Jean Francois Kerry. You can see his eyes narrow when he gets taunted. He's all self-regard and as long as everyone treats him like the Messiah all is well.

Keep it up GOP: More, better, faster.

“The sun shines
And people forget
The spray flies as the speedboat glides
And people forget
Forget they’re hiding
The girls smile
And people forget
The snow packs as the skier tracks
And people forget
Forget they’re hiding.

Behind an eminence front
Eminence front - It’s a put on.
It’s a put on.
It’s a put on.

Come on join the party

Won’t you come and join the party
Dress to kill...”

I saw the commercial on Fox news. It shows McCain on lots of TV Shows smiling and being embraced amd listening to the applause. There were no celebtards

The Hussein message is lost in the adoration. McCain comes across as a genuine celebrity in the various clips.

Hussein loses on the celebrity issue again.

As much as when Molly Ivins made fun of his ears?

He got all bent out of shape and went after her in NH because she had mentioned his ears in a column. Picture all the political cartoons with Bush having huge ears, and all the nasty comments on DU comparing Bush to a chimp.

Can you imagine what the press would have done if Bush went after a member of the press for mentioning his ears?

Obama seems arrogant and thin skinned. He could never handle being president. I’ll bet you anything his wife has more gonads for such things. He probably irritates her to death with his whining.

You know that McCain is getting to Obama when he responds like that. The difference is that McCain seems to take this as an adult, not a spoiled little brat. If I were McCain, I would respond to any question about Obama’s ad with something like, “Wow, I looked good in those clips...” Then thank Obama for finally giving up some air time for other people.

McCain's campaign should keep a line of communication open with Paris Hilton. Even if it's little jokes back and forth. Women love being joked with.

Who knows? She might endorse McCain at some appearance. With his wife there too. Every guy here and overseas will learn about THAT in 5 seconds. Faster than women talk:)

McCain should hold some ammo back until Obama is nominated. We don't know if Denver get's burned down yet.

I'm a little worried about the DNC. As has been reported, Barry Soetoro aka Obama gave his cousin Raila Odinga a million dollars to win the Presidency in Kenya. Raila didn't, but he (Raila) hired mobs to demonstrate (aka threaten to trash the major cities in Kenya) until the rightfully elected President of Kenya put him (Raila) in a position of power. Raila is Prime Minister only because he threatened mayhem (and allegedly used some of that money Barry sent him). Does anyone have an idea of what's going to happen at the DNC if they don't give the Nomination to Barry? He may not even be qualified due to his Indonesian adoption and citizenship and his using his Indonesian Birth Certificate to obtain his Passport so he could go to Pakistan when he was over age 18. But the Democrats won't care about that. They'll want our Constitution changed so that the "citizen of the world" is eligible to be President (whether he qualifies or not).

Does anyone have any or similar concerns about the DNC? And potentially the RNC, as well.
