Clooney's company buys rights to story of bin Laden's driver

Hollywood A-lister George Clooney is planning to bring the story of Osama bin Laden's driver to the big screen.

The actor's production company, Smokehouse, has bought the rights to a book about Osama bin Laden's driver, Salim Hamdan, according to The Observer newspaper.

The Challenge by journalist Jonathan Mahler chronicles Hamdan's capture and imprisonment at Guantanamo Bay and his subsequent trial, defended by a US navy lawyer, Lt.-Cmdr. Charles Swift.

Hamdan, from Yemen, was sentenced last week to 5 1/2 years in jail. It was the first sentence handed down to a Guantanamo Bay detainee by a U.S. military tribunal.

The trial was covered widely as military prosecutors had hoped it would showcase their success in the war on terror, claiming that Hamdan had knowledge of bin Laden's terrorist plans.

In the end, Hamdan got a light sentence. His defenders painted him as a simple man who had taken the job in order to feed his family. A military jury cleared him of terrorist conspiracy charges but found him guilty of providing support to a terrorist.

The report says Clooney is interested in playing the role of Swift, who began his job defending Hamdan as a young, inexperienced military lawyer.

He took the case to the Supreme Court and won. Swift's determination cost him his marriage and a promotion.

During Hamdan's sentencing, he appealed to the court to let his client return to his family in Yemen: "The best chance for him to rehabilitate is to reunite with that family. He won't put them at risk again."

Here's an idea, talk about box office! How about a movie featuring a man with an all-consuming passion for himself, movies and potbellied pigs? It could star, ummm, let me think........

I’ll probably get flamed for saying this but I was listening to Bob Kostas’ radio interview show yesterday AM. It was actually a rebroadcast since Kostas is busy doing other things now. Anyway he was interviewing Clooney. And the subject was Darfur and Clooney’s concern with this issue, and his willingness to engage the Chinese to get them to change their policies.

And everything the guy said was coherent and reasonable. He rejected all the easy cliches and pablums, and understood the possiblilities as well as the pitfalls of trying to get China to change their ways. He rejected the notion that things got better just because “awareness was raised”. In other words I could find nothing whatever to disagree with him on. Which just shows that these people are not necessarily all irrevocably deranged, just when it comes to certain things. They are capable of coherent thought. I was actually quite surprised.

And I suspect if you interviewed Mia Farrow on Darfur she could be similarly cogent. And Spielberg bowed out of the olympics rather than lend his name and support to the chicoms. So go figure.

You nailed it. Clooney will make an anti-American film, and nobody will watch it who doesn’t already hold those views.

Goforit Georgy — make another anti-American film to ‘express yourself’, and watch it flop at the box office, like all the rest of them do.

Coming Soon:

OSAMA’S ELEVEN

Starring George Clooney as Osama bin Laden, Brad Pitt as Ayman al Zawahiri, Elliot Gould as Mullah Omar, Don Cheadle as The Driver, and Julia Roberts as Herself.

In this side-splitting but sophisticated comedy caper, hyper-cool heist crew leader Osama hatches a plan to hijack a civilian airliner and fly it into the Trump Tower Hotel and Casino, grab a fortune from the casino vault, and get away clean. But naturally, everything that can go wrong, does.

Rated Morally Inexcusable For All Audiences

Every pro-terrorist, anti-American movie Hollywood has produced so far has been an A-1 bomb. A dead loser. And now they want to do a story about this nut bar who drove for an even bigger nutbar. Hell, I’d just as soon watch reruns of I Love Lucy. But Georgie figures to charge 10 bucks a throw for Americans to watch this whack job turned into a tragic hero! And these flakes have the monumental gall to wonder why nobody watches the Oscars!

I like George Clooney. I think he’s a nice guy. I think he would be a lot of fun to get drunk with.

I just wish he would steer clear of politics.

Gee, what a shocker - Clooney doing another Hate America movie.

So far, Hollywood doesn’t seem to have gotten the memo - these movies don’t play well at the theater and routinely lose boatloads of money.

Well, here’s another C(looney) movie I can’t wait to avoid!!

Are you kidding. This clown is the epitome of Hollywood liberalism, he's a typical liberal elitist snob. And all of his movies sucked with the exception of "O Brother Where Art Thou" maybe.

O Brother Where Art Thou wasn't his project. That was a Coen brothers' film.
