Fencing doesn’t seem like a typical American strength.

Good job, If only the Chinese could be shut out of medals.

Good. Now NBC will be forced to show it on TV (for a few minutes, with an interminable “up close and personal”). Any word yet on what personal tragedy the American fencer had to overcome?

Interesting, they say sabre yet in all the images the foil or epee was used.

Only that everyone thought the Gold she won in Athens was a fluke.

Guess not, eh?

Nope. They actually had decent coverage. They showed the gold medal match with some explanation as to what was going on. One of women went to Yale and they are both left handed. That’s all the personal stuff covered. There was a brief shot of Bush41 handing one of the medalists his hankerchief after the medal ceremony.

Of what I have seen on TV today, NBC has improved coverage immensley. They are showing complete matches/races in one set and devoting several consecutive minutes to the cycling. During women’s volleyball they did talk about the stabbing, but that is understandable.

Really? I’m shocked. I’ve glanced over a few times and must’ve missed it. Was it on NBC?

Fencing doesn’t seem like a typical American strength.

It isn't. But because of European traditionalism, women started fencing sabre here earlier than some other places. Many of the older European coaches wouldn't even let women touch a sabre; it just wasn't right!

I actually helped several women learn sabre in the early 1970s, before they were even allowed to compete. One, a decade later, became national champion!

You can't imagine how great an achievement it is for the US to sweep this event!

What was with all that screaming? Was it one of the fencers or the audience?

Yes, the real NBC. I watched the whole US versus Japan women’s volleyball with limited commercials, no “quick checks” on other sports, and no cheesy “athlete/coach profiles.”

PURE GOLD! Zagunis Defends Olympic Sabre Title

Former Notre Dame All-American and 2006 NCAA champion is first U.S. fencer ever to win two individual gold medals.

Aug. 9, 2008
\A trio of American flags were raised to the rafters at the Olympic Fencing Hall as tears streamed down the face of former Notre Dame All-American and 2006 NCAA champion Mariel Zagunis, winner of the first U.S. gold medal of the Beijing Olympics.

“It was a dream come true,” said Zagunis, who led an American sweep of Saturday’s women’s saber fencing.

Zagunis secured the gold with a 15-8 victory over Sada Jacobson, who won the silver. Becca Ward took the bronze.

Zagunis was also saber champion in 2004, when she became the first American in a century to win a fencing gold. Now, the U.S. is a legitimate powerhouse - in women’s saber at least. These same three women are seeded No. 1 for the team competition on Thursday.

If only the Chinese could be shut out of medals.

That's extraordinarily unlikely.

I watched just a little of the Opening Ceremonies just the part of the US teams entering and the President and Lady watching them etc. Then later tried to watch the boxing but no countries were on that I was interested in so shut it off.
