Bat-lash

By Sharon McGovern

The Dark Knight is a box office phenomenon, having beat the following records:

• Biggest single day gross (66.4 million).
• Biggest opening weekend (155.34 million).
• Broke the record for days taken to reach a 200 million dollar gross.
• Broke the record for days taken to reach a 300 million dollar gross.

And it’s on track to tie Titanic, the biggest blockbuster in history. Now, the sheer profitability of a movie doesn’t necessarily speak to its merit (see Titanic), but TDK’s continuing box office appeal does seem to indicate it’s touched a nerve. Some have proposed (with justification) that the nerve is the still raw wound of September 11 and subsequent terrorist attacks, and the craving for a return to justice and order—however difficult and costly that return might be. With a plot that touches not only on ruthless attacks by a terrorist madman, but also specific references to the FISA and SWIFT surveillance programs, and how very unpopular the vigorous fight against evil can make a character, the comparison of The Dark Knight to the current administration seems clear.

• In the Wall Street Journal, author Andrew Klavan wrote about “What Bush and Batman Have in Common.”

• In “The Dark Right,” Kyle Smith argues “Batman is Cheney with hair.”

Rush Limbaugh picked up the theme in his July 25th show, riffing on Klavan’s article without having seen the movie...

I doubt it will get to 600 million....it will take some people going 10-15 times. Possibly, but it will probably peter out at about $525-$550 IMO.

And when you consider adjusted for inflation it would have to hit 900 million to catch Titanic...sadly. I hate that movie.

Today’s climate of DVDs and High Ticket prices have changed the game, but the adjusted for inflation chart at Box Office Mojo is interesting.

My husband, who rarely sees a movie in the theater let alone more than once, has seen it twice. He puts it in his top 10 of all time. My son seen it 4 times.

We like to let the big crowds die down before going to see a movie. We’re going to see it this weekend. I imagine there are more than a few that will do the same.

We saw it in an IMAX Theater this past weekend.

It was beautiful, (in a reg theater I might have been bored, since I’m not a comic book fan).

I’m with you in Titanic- I had to walk out of the theater several times to keep from pulling my hair out. I remember about an hour into it I was wanting to scream “Sink already”. On the other hand, I loved this latest Batman movie, I thought it was very entertaining.

“The Dark Knight” is a masterpiece that deserves its phenomenal success. There’s no telling how high it will go - so far it has confounded every prediction.

We all make individual decisions for a variety of reasons.
I, like you, have no intention of ever watching it --- and feel no need to explain myself.

“A masterpiece of crap”?

Huh. Well, to each his own.

I thought the movie was incredibly ambitious, technically and thematically. And scaled the heights of its ambitions. It is the cinematic equivalent of Tolstoy, or Wagner - epic, profound, spectacular. For a studio tentpole movie, the film has an intensely meditative and uncompromising vision.

And Ledger’s performance was brilliant.
