A Kerrville pilot walked away unscathed after an emergency landing Tuesday morning at the Louis Schreiner Field.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety reports, David Wampler made the landing after the front landing gear of his Cessna 177 Cardinal RG did not deploy.
He landed on runway 30 and slid about 600 feet before coming to a stop.
The pilot did a textbook job of an emergency gear-up landing, said interim airport manager Bruce McKenzie. He remained very cool during the whole ordeal. He has been trained well.
According to DPS, Wampler took off from the Gillespie County Airport in Fredericksburg and was planning to land in Kerrville when his landing gear failed to deploy.
Wampler landed about 11:45 a.m. after 45 minutes of trying several methods to get the landing gear down.
Kerrville Fire and EMS crews rushed to the scene as soon as Wampler landed. No injuries were reported.
McKenzie said the landing did not cause any damage to the runway, which was reopened about 12:20 p.m.
Kerrville Police Department and Kerr County Sheriffs Office assisted at the scene.
Kerrville DPS Trooper Charlie Howell investigated the emergency landing.
Oh the humanity!
Yeah, but after a great landing, they get to use the airplane again.
Glad he made it down OK !
In a flying club I used to belong to, they used to remind us of the law of gravity—with one exception:
The law of gravity is that whatever goes up comes down. But in our flying club, whatever came down had better be able to go back up !!
