OTTAWA (AFP) — A Chinese immigrant who stabbed, gutted and beheaded a fellow passenger on a bus traveling across Canada last week also cannibalized the victim and pocketed his nose, lips and ear, a court heard Tuesday.
Vince Weiguang Li, 40, of Edmonton faces a second-degree murder charge in the horrific case.
The victim has been identified by friends as Tim McLean, a young man of 22 years who was returning home to Winnipeg from a job as a carnival worker in Edmonton in Western Canada.
In his second court appearance, Li was overheard saying "please kill me," his interim defense lawyer Randy Janis told AFP.
Prosecutors said he appeared to be eating pieces of his victim when police surrounded the bus on a desolate highway about 90 kilometers (55 miles) west of Winnipeg last week immediately following the July 30 attack.
Li had decapitated the victim and was taunting police and bystanders with the head, the Crown said.
According to reports, McLean had been asleep, his cheek pressed against the window of the bus when his assailant struck suddenly, stabbing him repeatedly in the chest with a "big Rambo knife."

China has muslims. In fact, they were just talking about it on Fox. They were talking about recent murders some distance away from where the Olympics will be. Fox news commentator was asking if it was safe and who were these people. The guest was saying they were non-hun (sp?) Chinese who wanted more autonomy. The news gal said, “Their Chinese muslims, right?” The answer was yes, although the guest wasn’t going to mention it.

From news reports based on interviews with other passengers, there appears to have been at least some planning. Mr. Li originally did not sit by the victim, but moved after a stop. The attack was apparently unprovoked. That is, witnesses say that there was no indication of any argument or disagreement between the victim and Mr. Li. He just started stabbing him, out of the blue.
That, and the big Rambo knife he had with him, speaks to some degree of premeditation.
Then its first degree, with special circumstances (decapitation, cannibalism), although I don't know how they handle this in Canada. I'm not hard to convince!
WTF were the people on the bus DOING the whole time he was filleting this guy? It takes a while to stab, gut, behead, and EAT a man!
Sorry, you're in Canada, wonder if they have the insanity defense there, hopefully this guy will live a short and torturous life in prison, if he doesn't commit suicide, the other inmates should take care of him less they wake up dismembered and served for dinner.
There are some large Muslem enclaves in China, so it is possible. I will say though that it does not appear (at this time) to be a case of Sudden Jihad Syndrome. (SJS). But again we are being 'spared' any details.
It’s not just the Gitmo detainees, though. From what I can find, most Uyghurs seem to have names that look a lot the names Kazakhstan/Uzbekistan/Etceterastan. Which makes sense since they’re ethnically, linguistically and culturally a lot more similar to those neighbors immediately to the west than they are to the Han Chinese.

Probably hard to pin the 1st degree - with its implication of cold calculation and pre-meditation - on someone so obviously insane.
The crimes being so barbaric, to the most reasonable people, the man is as crazy as you can get.
Uderstand the sentiments calling for his immediate execution. But they will likely keep this guy on ice for a while, reckoning he is a gold mine for the clinical/abnormal psych specialists. Compare to Dahlmer, where the motivation was sexual. What is going on in this person’s head where he would commit this sort of killing in public - in full view of people on a bus? What psychology is being satisfied by this act?

True, from the witness accounts there was no warning of the attack. Hard to believe there was absoultely no planning on his part, though, since the victim was asleep.

True, but some have Arabized those names, some have not. More of the detainees seem to have done so than the other Uyghurs on that page.
However while most Uyghurs are Muslim, not all Chinese Muslims are Uyghurs. Some are even Han.
Time will tell. All we can say now is that this guy's actions resemble those of a member of the ROP who gets SJS.

How many decapitations have there been among the small group of SJS attacks? Any? The only ones I can think of have been in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and came at the end of a lengthy kidnapping, not as a sudden, individual outburst.

I did a bit of research, and found that there are several distinct groups of "Chinese" Muslims. One is ethnically (meaning physically, not culturally) indistinguishable from other Han Chinese. Although they are called "Hui" people. They speak the same language as the Han and dress very much the same, with he exception the women covering their heads. They also have adapted the Han cuisine to fit the Islamic dietary restrictions. Some have distinctive names, others do not.
Another group is the Uighurs, who are ethnically Turkic, (like the Kirghiz). Much of the current attention is focused on this more "unruly" group.
