KABUL, Afghanistan -- In a blow to al Qaeda in Pakistan, the terrorist group confirmed Sunday that one of its top weapons researchers, Abu Khabab al-Masri, was killed, apparently in a U.S. missile strike.

Is Al Qaeda in the habit of confirming the death of its operatives? Given that his death has been reported before, isn't is just as likely that they want us to think he's dead. What would be the benefit of admitting it otherwise?

Why would they announce his death? What does it gain AQ to keep announcing the deaths of their top operatives? It only makes them look weaker. It is a ruse.

Masri might have "called in some favors" to get Al Qaeda to confirm the death, helping his standing as the new PM. Even if so, it doesn't mean the death did not occur.
