Climate chill came exactly 12,679 years ago: study

OSLO (Reuters) - A drastic cooling of the climate in western Europe happened exactly 12,679 years ago, apparently after a shift to icy winds over the Atlantic, scientists said on Friday, giving a hint of how abruptly the climate can change.

The study, of pollens, minerals and other matter deposited in annual layers at the bottom of Lake Meerfelder Maar in Germany, pinpointed an abrupt change in sediments consistent with a sudden chill over just one year.

"Our data indicate an abrupt increase in storminess during the autumn to spring seasons, occurring from one year to the next at 12,679 years before the present, broadly coincident with other changes in this region," they wrote in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Scientists have long known about the sharp chill towards the end of the last Ice Age, known as the Younger Dryas cooling. The study by researchers in Germany, Switzerland and the United States may help clear up the causes and exact duration.

"We suggest that this shift in wind strength represents an abrupt change in the North Atlantic westerlies towards a stronger and more zonal jet," they wrote.

Other theories have been a weakening of the warm Gulf Stream current, perhaps caused by a vast inflow to the Atlantic of fresh water from melting glaciers over North America or Europe.

Let's see if I got this right, it was getting warmer so that causes cold glaciers to become warm and melt and that put water into the cold ocean but the warm part of the cold ocean where the warm Gulf Stream was but that was diverted by the glacier melt so the warming Earth got cold.

now in case you didn't get that, it was cleverly repeated by the global warming scientists as a scenario for what is about to happen:

Some have suggested that a melting of Greenland ice, for instance, could lead to a flow of fresh water into the Atlantic that could also slow down the Gulf Stream current and bring an abrupt chill despite an overall warming trend.

Or, the previous ice age could have been caused by the fact that the earth was well... getting cooler:

The wind shift might in turn have been triggered by factors such as a slight southwards shift of sea ice in the North Atlantic caused by some other natural factors, they said.

Just so you know, it's either ying or Yang.

These global warming scientists have a way of clearing everything up, don't you think?

The whole point of the article?
“Some modern scientists fear such wrenching changes may be caused by global warming widely blamed on human emissions of greenhouse gases from fossil fuels.”

This article has important information, yet there is not one serious comment to this point.

Folks should realize that the more we know about everything the safer and healthier we will be.

Ignorance should not be encouraged, nor even tolerated.

Actually the information in the article isn't very important at all.

Determining the date is not particularly valuable. Interesting no doubt but not of intrinsic value.

It can potentially be of use in related areas.

The “why” is the important factor and that is still completely in the realm of the theory.

Considering that it occurred abruptly there is nothing with todays technology that could be done to prevent it's reoccurring.

The one thing that could be done is massive relocation.

One way or the other there would be massive deaths. The loss of arable land will lead to mass starvation. It is pretty likely that our neighbors to the south will not be too impressed with a massive migration.

There will not be housing for them. Any time there is lack of food and shelter you can expect massive civil disturbances. Much blood shed.

On the upside, Maybe the Yellowstone caldera will blow first.

WOW, it is incredible — just think, 12,679 years ago all those desperate humans huddled around Stone Age campfires caused Global Warming and then a sudden shift to a new Ice Age.

We never give those Stone Age folks enough credit.........

You are correct.

Thank you for your posts. They are very informative to those of us who aren’t blessed with a good understanding of science.

I agree completely. Which is why all the hand-waving and blowing of smoke by the AGW crowd should be eliminated.

Cheers!

Nively done. It’s not every day that you see someone setting themselves up for a zinger so easily, with a wide eyed look and an oblivious smile.

The last thread we had on the causes of the Younger Dryas was transferred to the "religion" category.

This drove off half the remaining scientists who post on FR.

This is yet another thread regarding the Younger Dryas, and the same moderator who jerked us around with the answer to why there were diamonds on top of hills in Southern Indiana (rather than at the bottom) is liable to reclassify this one as "religion".

occurring from one year to the next at 12,679 years before the present

Are those 365 day years adjusted for leap years?
