The fatal shootings of a father and two sons in San Francisco's Excelsior district June 22 were not road-rage killings and instead were motivated by the killer's belief that his targets were in a rival gang, the head of the police homicide unit said Monday.
"We know it is gang related," Lt. Mike Stasko told the Board of Supervisors' Public Safety Committee. Stasko said the victims, Tony Bologna, 48, and his sons, Michael, 20, and Matthew, 16, were attacked because of their appearance.
"Apparently, the people in the car were similar to Hispanic males, and they were targeted because of (seemingly) being Hispanic males.
"It had nothing to do with road rage," Stasko said.
The Bolognas were gunned down in their Honda Civic as they were heading home from a Sunday afternoon family barbecue in Fairfield. Edwin Ramos, 21, has pleaded not guilty to triple murder charges.
Police initially said the shooting was the product of road rage after a chance encounter between the two drivers. Tony Bologna had to stop his car on narrow Congdon Street and blocked the path of a car that was turning onto the street, police said.
As Stasko, who coached youth basketball with Bologna, described it the day after the shootings, the other driver stared at Bologna, who backed up his car to let the other vehicle by. The driver then drove alongside and, without a word, opened fire.
But on Monday, Stasko told reporters the Bolognas were attacked because the killer mistook the victims for gang members. The Bologna boys, he said, had short hair and were wearing baseball caps sideways.

Just a soccer team, huh?
Looks like the cover-up machine is out in full force.
Thank heavens, that explains everything.
For a moment there I was worried that Gavin and his friends blew it.
Not road rage?
Well, our diversity is our strength....
San Francisco, the city of morons.
PLEASE let there be an earthquake soon.
Well, that is a relief! We thought he was just a murderous thug who shot some people for dissing him.
So, that means the sanctuary city policy is right and will continue.
JUST READING THE ARTICLE MAKES IT SOUND AS THOUGH THAT BEING “GANG RELATED” MAKES IT OKAY SOMEHOW..................
Oh, well, if ever there was a reason to kill strangers...(sigh)
My thought exactly. The excuses begin. This is a horrible crime. I really feel for the Mother—her whole life ended in an instant due to PC politics. I can’t even being to imagine her rage. Very tragic.
Translation: “The killings were nothing personal. It was just business.”
...And is that file photo of the victims supposed to tell us that they somehow had it coming???
The wife and mother of these victims should sue the city of San Francisco, the Mayor and the Board of Stupidvisors into abject poverty for implementing “Sanctuary City” as a blank check for illegal alien thugs — sue them until they can’t even afford to buy toilet paper to wipe their bleeding asses.
“Apparently, the people in the car were similar to Hispanic males, and they were targeted because of (seemingly) being Hispanic males.”
Notice that they are trying to portray this as a hate crime against Hispanics, even though the victims were not Hispanic, but the perp was.
To the SF liberals, this is red meat... Stereotyping based on appearance or racial characteristics kills. That’s the only lesson they take from this.
In my openion she is not enraged enough. She has the tv coverage, she should be out there screaming to anyone that will listen that she is sueing the city of San Francisco, California, the Feds, and anyone else remotely involved who ‘allowed’ an illegal alien gangbanger to murder her family.
The whole world would know that illegals should be deported period if I had her platform. I would make it my life’s mission.
Not a hate crime though
Now, if the boys had been wearing dresses....
Bad guys killing bad guys or so they would have us think.
Bad guys killing bad guys or so they would have us think.
Me, either, but I'd like to see her sue SF for gazillions for what their "sanctuary city" policy has done to her...............
