The fatal shootings of a father and two sons in San Francisco's Excelsior district June 22 were not road-rage killings and instead were motivated by the killer's belief that his targets were in a rival gang, the head of the police homicide unit said Monday.
"We know it is gang related," Lt. Mike Stasko told the Board of Supervisors' Public Safety Committee. Stasko said the victims, Tony Bologna, 48, and his sons, Michael, 20, and Matthew, 16, were attacked because of their appearance.
"Apparently, the people in the car were similar to Hispanic males, and they were targeted because of (seemingly) being Hispanic males.
"It had nothing to do with road rage," Stasko said.
The Bolognas were gunned down in their Honda Civic as they were heading home from a Sunday afternoon family barbecue in Fairfield. Edwin Ramos, 21, has pleaded not guilty to triple murder charges.
Police initially said the shooting was the product of road rage after a chance encounter between the two drivers. Tony Bologna had to stop his car on narrow Congdon Street and blocked the path of a car that was turning onto the street, police said.
As Stasko, who coached youth basketball with Bologna, described it the day after the shootings, the other driver stared at Bologna, who backed up his car to let the other vehicle by. The driver then drove alongside and, without a word, opened fire.
But on Monday, Stasko told reporters the Bolognas were attacked because the killer mistook the victims for gang members. The Bologna boys, he said, had short hair and were wearing baseball caps sideways.

Just a soccer team, huh?
Looks like the cover-up machine is out in full force.
Thank heavens, that explains everything.
For a moment there I was worried that Gavin and his friends blew it.
Not road rage?
Well, our diversity is our strength....
San Francisco, the city of morons.
PLEASE let there be an earthquake soon.
Well, that is a relief! We thought he was just a murderous thug who shot some people for dissing him.
So, that means the sanctuary city policy is right and will continue.
JUST READING THE ARTICLE MAKES IT SOUND AS THOUGH THAT BEING “GANG RELATED” MAKES IT OKAY SOMEHOW..................
Oh, well, if ever there was a reason to kill strangers...(sigh)
My thought exactly. The excuses begin. This is a horrible crime. I really feel for the Mother—her whole life ended in an instant due to PC politics. I can’t even being to imagine her rage. Very tragic.
Translation: “The killings were nothing personal. It was just business.”
...And is that file photo of the victims supposed to tell us that they somehow had it coming???
The wife and mother of these victims should sue the city of San Francisco, the Mayor and the Board of Stupidvisors into abject poverty for implementing “Sanctuary City” as a blank check for illegal alien thugs — sue them until they can’t even afford to buy toilet paper to wipe their bleeding asses.
“Apparently, the people in the car were similar to Hispanic males, and they were targeted because of (seemingly) being Hispanic males.”
Notice that they are trying to portray this as a hate crime against Hispanics, even though the victims were not Hispanic, but the perp was.
To the SF liberals, this is red meat... Stereotyping based on appearance or racial characteristics kills. That’s the only lesson they take from this.
In my openion she is not enraged enough. She has the tv coverage, she should be out there screaming to anyone that will listen that she is sueing the city of San Francisco, California, the Feds, and anyone else remotely involved who ‘allowed’ an illegal alien gangbanger to murder her family.
The whole world would know that illegals should be deported period if I had her platform. I would make it my life’s mission.
Not a hate crime though
Now, if the boys had been wearing dresses....
Bad guys killing bad guys or so they would have us think.
Bad guys killing bad guys or so they would have us think.
Me, either, but I'd like to see her sue SF for gazillions for what their "sanctuary city" policy has done to her...............
This is a re-direction of the attention of the dumb masses’ about the cause and effect of their sanctuary city policy..........
BINGO!!!!!
Except that the family wasn’t involved in a gang. The psycho killer illegal just thought they were -— and that was enough reason for him to execute three innocent people.
Everybody carrys guns in our town, mainly for bear. You'd think there'd be a drunken shooting now and then. Hasn't been a murder here in over 25 years and that guy was drown. We even had a mexican family here once, they were decent enough people; just couldn't take the winters I think.
Somethings gotta change down there.
Yeah, right. I'll bet you anything he was an illegal in the US "legally", at this point in time, probably requesting asylum as he'd be killed (as a gang member) if returned to El Salvador.
If this was gang related that should make it even more condemning of SF’s sanctuary city policies. In California, Hispanics are the overwhelming majority of illegal aliens, and WELL represented in the gang activity in California cities.
So, an Hispanic illegal alien gang member murders three people who he mistakenly believed were also members of Hispanic gangs because of their appearance?
Yep, those supporting sanctuary city policies are much more to blame in that scenario than in a road rage scenario.
At least that part of the story got out first. I think the 'gang related' phrase carries a lot of unfortunate connotations with it
Agreed.
When something smells odd, my first instinct is to hold my nose. If this were anywhere but SanFran, I might give “CYA” a bit more doubt.
It’s just a case of “mistaken identity”..
Oh yeah, unloading on folks you don’t like in plain daylight with AK47s.. this is not the first time in San Fran.
DA Kamala Harris ought to be feeling a lot of heat on this one.. not so long a go, one cop killer using an ak47 didn’t get tried for capital murder cuz the lady DA doesn’t support it.
I wonder if 3 family members, innocents, blown away on a SF street, by a sanctuary city beneficiary, might want to make her think twice this time around , I’d prefer she just resign and let some one up to the job get it done.
and that seems to make it all excusable to the good people in the Establishment in San Francisco.
Still a ‘hate crime’. . .or are ‘gang related’ murders sort of ‘ok’. . .like Islamic ‘Honor’killings. . .
There was a time when “gang related” meant gang on gang violence.
They (SF) are probably trying to divert attention from the very last portion of the article.
sanctuary city....isn’t that just precious????pathetic
Unfortunately, the only word we haven't been hearing - at least not from the family - is "lawsuit." They need to sue SF for every dime they have. Money is the ONLY thing these people understand, and the only motivator that may change some of these ridiculous laws.
Reviewing this article on the Bologna murders, I looked for the heart-rending, sordid journalistic `flair’, as detailed below (in the thread the mod just killed) but it’s just not there:
“By the time help arrived, Luis Ramirez lay convulsing in the middle of the street, foam running from his mouth.
Crystal Dillman displays the religious medal worn by her fiance, Luis Ramirez, who died from a beating.
1 of 3 Blows had struck the 25-year-old Mexican immigrant with such force that they left a clotted, bruised impression of Jesus Christ on the skin of his chest from the religious medal he wore.
His attackers were white teenagers, including star students and football players, witnesses told police.
After a night of drinking, the teens taunted the undocumented worker with racial epithets, pummeled him to the ground and then kicked him in the head, court documents charge. He died in a hospital two days later.”
I think this is appauling. I just heard about this tragedy caused by an illegal who twice the city had the opportunity to deport and did not.
I just found about about this today and I’m amazed that I had to read it Newt’s newsletter, otherwise I wouldn’t have known about it. I would assume that Fox News would be talking about this night and day. It’s quite puzzling that they aren’t.
Anyway, there’s a link to the LA Times story: http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/front/la-me-sanctuary26-2008jul26,0,3980668.story
