The devil riders of Darfur

Halima Bashir

The village seemed to be strangely quiet, almost as if it were holding its breath, awaiting something. I was discussing supplies we needed for the clinic when I heard a distant commotion. There were faint cries and the pounding of running feet. I wondered, fearfully, if it was an attack.

Suddenly, I caught sight of a crowd of people surging out of the marketplace. Among them were figures carrying heavy burdens in their arms. As the crowd drew closer, I realised what they were carrying: it was the girls from the village school.

I could see heads lolling and beige nyangours, long dresses that are standard girls’ school uniform, flapping in the breeze. As the crowd enveloped me, I realised that the nyangours were ripped and dirtied, and streaked with blood.

The wonders of the Religion of Peace never cease to amaze me.

The cruelty of man is not new and is unpleasant to read about.

Just like Karadzic and Mladic’s thugs.

Just like the drunken machete-wielders of Burundi.

Just like the hand-choppers of Sierra Leone and Liberia.

It would take only a handful of professional soldiers with complete authorization to shoot to kill and air support to mop up this bunch of gangsters.

That’s what really chaps my ass.

Everyone should read that entire article. It sheds plenty of light on the Nazis of today.

The youngest girl was seven, the oldest 13. They had been repeatedly attacked with unimaginably brutal sexual violence.

It was early evening by the time I had finished stitching up the last of them. More than 40 girls had been brought to the clinic

“They were shouting and screaming at us. You know what they were saying? ‘We have come here to kill you! To finish you all! You are black slaves! You are worse than dogs! Either we kill you or we give you Arab children. Then there will be no more black slaves in this country.’ The worst was that they were laughing and yelping with joy as they did those terrible things. Those grown men were enjoying it, as they passed the little girls around.

We will let you live so you can tell your mothers and fathers and brothers what we did to you. Tell them from us: if you stay, the same and worse will happen to you all. Next time, we will show no mercy. Leave this land. Sudan is for the Arabs. It is not for black dogs and slaves’.”

Waiting for a response from the NAACP, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Obama...

This part of the world has had problems since the beginning of time. What makes our people think we can change anything? Congress is considering a Bill right now that sends $50 Billion to Africa. Where are they going to get it other than take money out of the pockets of Americans. We cannot take care of the whole world. America must take care of itself first or we won’t be able to help anyone. They also want to allow people with Aids to come to this country at will. Are our people in Congress crazy????? The only way we can come up with $50 Billion is to raise out taxes or borrow it from China. We won’t even rebuild homes for those caught in fires or floods. I am really getting tired of all this crap. We need a new Congress.

Why cannot black Americans understand what Islam is about? The Moslems don’t hide it very well, or even much try.

I am simply and totally at a loss to explain, much less understand, why the ‘civilized’ world continues to tolerate this type of behavior from a small, but increasing, part of the Earth’s population. True we can’t stop everything, but we have an obligation to do what we can. And to me that doesn’t include putting our faith in a sham organization like the UN, then sit back and act as though we’ve met our obligation.

“I am really getting tired of all this crap. We need a new Congress.”

And you’re going to GET one:
Meet the 2009 Congress, overwhelmingly democratic and a president Obama in the White House....

Um, hopefully not, but I DO have a serious question for you:
Will you vote McCain in November?

What brought a semblance of truce to south Sudan was arming the farming tribes. The UN condemned the slave redemption efforts because the redeemers were taking some of the money they had been given and buying weapons. Somehow the Janjaweed would rather attack peasants armed with sticks and machetes than with AK-47s.

Because to stop it, and to reverse it, will require behavior on the part of the West similar to what the Serbians did in Bosnia and Kosovo. THEY were serious about “stopping Islam”.

And that simply isn’t acceptable (nor fathomable) to Western sensibilities.

What did we of the West do to Serbia for their efforts?

Anyone catch the comment about how it’s all the U.S.’s fault? I could choke some people.

We used to help out the family of a girl named Salma over there.
Then the private aid agency was expelled from Sudan.
Does Salma still live? Does she still want to live?

I feel humiliated and stained
that these things happen on my own paradise of a planet
... committed by humanoids who even look something like me.

Excellent point. I guess I’m really speaking out of frustration as much as anything. We just seem to sit by and watch it happen. Even if we can’t stop it at least we could find a way to impose a higher cost on them. Like with Iran, not only do we not act decisively to bring them around, but we don’t even make it costly for them to enjoy their success.

Not new, still horrifying. God grant this brave woman peace.
