F14 Tomcat with the wings out??

No, probably a B-1.

Nope that’s definitely an F-14 with its wings out.

My ex was stationed at Barksdale when we were first married. Spent a couple of years there. This is so sad. I hope they find them all. Prayers for the crew and their families.

The incorrect image on the news footage is an F-14 Tomcat.

Thoughts with the families and hopefully everyone is rescued safely.

that make up the B-52G egress systems.

Correction: that made up the B-52G egress systems. Only H models are still in service.

The B-52H had a crew of six until 1991 when the gunner position was eliminated and the tail gun deactivated and removed.

Not “required” but would have been aboard.

Your diagram is a bit off.

Pilot behind him about 10 feet is what was the gunners seat (left side of aircraft)
copilot and behind him about ten feet is the EWO seat( right side of aircraft)

The tail gunners on earlier models bailed out by separating the tail cone, and just jumped out.

When in Air Force tech school, (Crew Chief) the instructors told us that a few times in Viet Nam when the aircraft was hit, and communications was lost between the tail gunner and the rest of the crew, the tail gunner would bail out, not knowing that the thing was still air worthy. So the aircraft would return to base with no tail cone, and no tail gunner.

I can't verify that story, but they wouldn't lie to me , would they?

Of course not! ;) But I heard the same stories. The G & H models had the gunner in the main crew compartment behind the pilot and facing aft.

Latest:

At least two people have been recovered from the water but the military has not said what condition they are in. The B-52 had a crew of six.

Col. Robert E. Wheeler, 2d Bomb Wing commander, scheduled a news conference for 9 a.m. today outside Barksdale.

B-52 flights from Barksdale were cancelled until the Air Force can determine if Sunday’s crash was due to structural or mechanical problems.

New, but no real news:

Col. Robert E. Wheeler, 2d Bomb Wing commander, held a brief news conference for 9 a.m. today outside one of the gates to Barksdale. He described the mood of the base as “hopeful” but disclosed no new information about how the crash happened or the search for crew members.

Family and friends wanting information about the crash can call 318-456-8400, Wheeler said.

Yep. I missed the big, honking air intakes at the wing roots and the dual tailpipes.

I'll see if I can check that out.. I work with a guy that was a former Tail gunner on a Buff.. He does have some stories.. like he's describing the ride back there.. I think he said that a foot of motion in the front was amplified in the X 8

“The crash of the Spirit of Kansas, which had 5,100 flight hours, was the first ever for the B-2.”

How many planes get a chance at a 2nd crash?

There are enough B52s flying around Shreveport that the local news station should know the difference between a BUFF and a F14.

I think they do it on purpose just to piss off military personnel.

That is probably giving them too much credit, though, for even knowing the difference.

It’s probably just a graphic they use for any military aircraft story.
