It makes no difference unless the votes were there to block the nominee, whereas obviously they were not. It is also a bit of a stretch to say the opposition party should constantly try to defeat supreme court nominations. Both parties get nominees through unless enough of an issue is raised that the public will block the nominee. As you know, nominees never testify about how they will decide any issue, so there is never a clear basis to stop a nomination based on how the judge will rule.
