"Efraim Zuroff, a Holocaust historian who heads the center's Jerusalem office, told media that he had received information that Heim was in the Patagonia region of southern Chile, where his daughter lives.
"In the last few days we've received information from two different sources, both relating to Chile, which we think have very good potential," said Efraim Zuroff, according to the Reuters news agency.
Why would Efraim Zuroff be talking about fresh hot tips on fugitives in the press, as that would tip off any target they were hunting for?
So -- is Efraim Zuroff after Nazis, or after publicity? Or after funding so that they can keep the prospect alive that there are still Nazis to hunt, and therefore his funding sources should keep giving?
Well there are only so many years to keep up this gig. You would think it would not be wise to tip off your suspect.
Publicity leads to more tips?
I think the risk of a 94 year old bolting would be pretty low, so there’s not much downside, and the publicity might turn up some fresh leads.
One reason? To spook the game out of hiding.
I doubt it’s for fundraising, many of their leads are generated as a result of publicity. In fact I believe this information was developed as a result of their publicity campaign a few months ago.
Maybe he's hoping a private citizen will find him and torture him before killing him. Then there will be no worries about prisoners rights, blah blah.
