McCain tells Hispanic group of his commitment to immigration reform
IHT ^ | July 8, 2008 | Michael Cooper

WASHINGTON: Senator John McCain told a major Hispanic group here Tuesday that he remained committed to passing the kind of immigration legislation that angered many Republican voters last year, but he underscored that he intended to first secure U.S. borders.

Speaking to the convention of the League of United Latin American Citizens, McCain noted his efforts to pass comprehensive immigration legislation, which was supported by President George W. Bush and such Democrats as Senator Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts but which fell apart last year after an angry grass-roots movement that viewed it as tantamount to amnesty rose up to oppose its passage.

I think JUan would see the same grass roots movement, if he tries to sneak amnesty in again.. I really try and want to support this guy.... but he is making it difficult to say the least... next week he is in san diego eating tacos with LaRaza, a racist group.. check out their web site..

Voting for this guy is going to be an epic struggle. In my precinct we will be going back to optical scan (this is Palm Beach County - touch screens were not acceptable here!) devices and I think taking the pencil and drawing the dark line next to McCain’s name is going to leave me drenched in sweat.

In other words, he is against the will of the People. And he is a total liar on securing the borders. What else is new?

A vote for Obama is a 90% loser, a vote for McStain is a 75% loser.

What am I supposed to do?

I guess I'll vote for the 75% LOSER, as I puke....

The problem is, every Democrat will be for it. McCain won’t need one Republican vote to pass his bill. And on top of that, many Republicans will vote to support his bill.

Folks flatter themselves that they staved off the immigration bill last year. The truth is, McCain/Kennedy had all the votes it needed, McCain just didn’t want to push it with the election coming up the next year.

McCain will make sure every illegal in this nation is naturalized within three to five years. And when they are naturalized, there goes the chain migration.

We stand to gain 100 million new citizens within ten to twelve years. Poor, unable to speak read or write English, unable to support themselves... good luck citizens.

I don’t think Obama would get every thing he wants passed.

I think McCain would. And that’s where your 75% to 90% loser thing falls appart.

Who passes leftist policy easier, Obama or McCain?

Obama has the House and Senate Republicans to deal with.

McCain has them in his hip pocket, and the Democrats would support any leftist policy he lofted.

I still say McCain is the serious guy to fear. If he wins, there will be one party rule. It will be 75 to 90% for anything leftist John McCain submits to the House and Senate.

John, I hate, absolutely /hate/ that you’re continuing to pander over an issue that most every /citizen/ of these United States thinks should be handled by deportation. But, as much as I hate it, as much as I didn’t want you to be our nominee because of this issue and many others, the one thing you’re not is a flip-flopper. We knew where you stood, you still stand there, you moron, but you’re at least...consistent.

Consistent is not a good thing when it comes to McCain. I’d much rather have a politician who is willing to learn from past mistakes or who is willing to listen to the people than a hard-left leaning but consistent Republican. Actually, I’d just call the latter stubborn.

Just when I'm starting to think that I can hold my nose and vote for McCain, up comes amnesty. I'm sure that Obama is the worse person, but I wonder who'll do the least damage.
Blacks are opposed to amnesty probably more than whites are, but the problem is that McCain, Obama and most of the whores in Congress don't care about anything more than fooling enough voters to keep themselves in power.

If the legislation does not come as one piece but rather as two pieces. Such that first comes border protection and then later comes the amnesty only legislation—then I think that conservatives can get behind McCain because with the understanding that they will support him wholeheartedly on the first piece of legislation and fight him tooth and claw on the second piece of legislation. It should be understood that the second piece of legislation—the amnesty alone legislation is much weaker legislation than border security plus amnesty legislation.

Oh, well, yeah, I see where you're coming from there, but then I look at this picture and I wonder which ones would step down in moments after Obama was elected, and who Pelosi and Kennedy will push forward. Let's see... A Latina La Raza activist, an ACLU Civil Rights Attorney, and, oh, maybe something fun like a politician.

If we had the senate locked up, I'd actually be willing to give it a go. But we don't.

I must disagree with you severely on that, FRiend.

GWB was ‘our’ guy and do you remember the fight we put up? ...it ain’t over. It’s not the end.

It’s merely the end of the beginning.

It’s just Round 2 with a new pitcher.

We would indeed get nasty fastballs from McCain—worse yet, we’d get that PLUS nothing but mere spitwads for our military to fight with, with Obama.

America is just waking up. Late indeed. But most definitely awake.

If I understand correctly, even Executive Orders must be ratified by Congress.

And meanwhile, it ain’t over until it’s over. And it’s a long way from over, I pray, by the grace of God.

Pray and pass it on!

Yeah, David Gergen is already polishing his resume and getting ready for the call from the Obama Administration.

What amazes me, is that there is such a supply of elitists, arrogant, no real world accomplishment elected officials, that they throw one up every four years for the American people to knock down.

Just this year, they offered us giants like Biden, Dodd, Gravel. Four years ago, they gave us John F. Kerry, but don't forget Howard Dean, Weasley Clark. Before that we got algore and before that I can't forget Dukakis, Mondale, Jimmah Carter, Gary Hart. I don't put Bill Clinton, Bill Richardson or Paul Tsongas in this category.

And why don't Republicans bring up the Democrats long, long history of support for HIGHER gas prices. I remember Paul Tax on gas. I remember that algore and Clinton supported a 50 cent a gallon tax and supported a "BTU" tax, which would raise gas prices.

I think what it now is boiling down to is citizenship. Does McCain's plan grant real citizenship with voting rights or does it not?

Obama has already stated full citizenship or amnesty to 12 million illegal;s which secures their vote in the Dems party.

If true citizenship is denied under McCain's plan, even though the illegals can stay, it would be better than giving illegals voting rights.

and certainly not imbued with any love or respect for America or it's great history, nor have any care whatsoever about the stunning achievements of Western Civilization and the pride and dignity of it's great culture.

More than America is about to go down the drain, and someday people may well ponder how America and Western Civilization fell apart in much the same way that modern historians look back at Rome and debate how its passed away

but hey, the democrats will move into power forever...

I’m coming to the conclusion that the idiot multiculturalists and globalists believe that the chaos they’re unleashing won’t affect them and that their gated communities and rent-a-cops will protect them.

As they’re shot, hanged or beheaded, depending upon which collectivist group gets to them first, they’ll be shouting: “What did I do wrong? I’m your comrade, amigo.” And they still won’t get it.

McInsane is the more dangerous candidate. He will have an easier time passing amnesty than Obama because the GOP will a more difficult time going against their newly elected liberal President. Do we really want Amnesty hung across the GOP neck? McCain will ensure that the GOP gets credit for this travesty. If we must have amnesty, I want the democrats to face the voters with this issue.

The issue of amnesty was settled in 2005. There are enough votes in both the House and Senate to pass some form of amnesty.

The remaining components of comprehensive are what the issue will be. You need to look at those.

Guestworkers. Look to 2007 and the Dorgan/Union amendment to sunset the guest worker program that passed and killed the first bill in 2007. The union doesn't want guest workers because they are difficult to organize. They want to minimize the number guestworkers/temporary visas and maximize permanent visas. The union also wants an inside track to organize H1B workers.

Enforcement. Border enforcement, internal enforcement, and workplace enforcement. Again, look to 2007 and the second bill. There was the Baucus-Tester amendment #1236 to prevent linking Real ID to employee verification. The Gang of 12 tried and failed to table this amendment but before it could get a vote, another bill killer(poison pill) passed. This was the Grassley-Baucus-Obama amendment #1441 to block merging of the SS and DHA databases and also would block employee verification altogether. Keep in mind that Illinois(Obama's state), passed a law that prevents any employer from using fedgov's employee verification. Also keep in mind that Real ID has been delayed, so any bill that depends on Real ID for enforcement will be delayed.

So, whether McCain or Obama wins, will make a difference in what comprehensive bill emerges. But, the congressional elections will be more important.

If Obama wins, and the dems expand their control of Congress significantly, they will abandon the McCain-Kennedy compromise and the AgJobs compromise. Dorgan(or Durbin) will replace Kennedy as the dem's lead negotiator. The 2009 Immigration Bill will be very different.
