55 mph is So 70s: Voters Oppose Lowering National Speed Limit Monday, July 07, 2008
A proposal to conserve energy by reducing the nationwide speed limit to 55 miles-per-hour is strongly opposed by the nation’s voters. Voters continue to prefer solutions that lead to finding more energy rather than relying upon conservation efforts. Majorities support both drilling for oil in both offshore wells and in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 59% of voters oppose the lower speed limit and 34% support it. Democrats are fairly evenly divided on the proposal with 43% in favor and 49% opposed. Republicans oppose the lower speed limit by a two-to-one margin and unaffiliated voters oppose it by a three-to-one margin.

I think the Democrats should campaign on a promise of a nationwide 55 MPH speed limit... for the Children!

I’s like to see a 100 MPH lane instead of HOV lanes. The only requirement, safety aside, is that the vehicle emits less than xxx pollutants doing so.
Independents more conservative than Republicans! Interesting, but not surprising.
Yes - it’s wonderful: the great big brother will force us and our workers to drive 55; saving $ 2 worth of gas; while costing our company an extra $200.00 in wages, and adding four hours to everyone’s work day. But, hey, they know best !

I just saw a Virginia State trooper pull over a dreaded SUV, that had the nerve to travel 69 in a 65 zone on Route 288. Believe me, the tickets are already flying. It is a mandate.
Don’t give the government lackey’s any further chance’s to steal your hard earned cash.

Despite the polls, Dems aren’t cracking on drilling yet.
They must think that they can hold congressional seats at $4 + a gallon.
Worse case scenario, they hold are expand their majorities, we’re looking at $10 a gal.
It’s a safety issue. 55 caused more accidents because people fell asleep at the wheel!
