With the defending Republicans facing twists and turns confirming that truth can be stranger than fiction, the Democrats now appear to hold a solid edge in the battle for the seat New York Republican Rep. Vito J. Fossella left open — after the married father of three admitted in May that he has a daughter from an ongoing extramarital relationship.
The Republicans’ lack of a consensus replacement candidate less than two weeks before the July 10 candidate filing deadline, with no top-tier prospects at hand for the party’s Sept. 9 primary, has prompted CQ Politics to change its rating on the race in New York’s 13th Congressional District to Democrat Favored from No Clear Favorite.
This big rating jump means there is still enough of a Republican base in New York City’s sole GOP-held House district to enable the party to bounce back if it can find a new candidate to rally around — but that the Democrats now look increasingly likely to take a seat that looked like a long shot when the campaign year began.
Already reeling from the political demise of one-time rising star Fossella, the GOP effort fell into chaos when Frank Powers — the former Wall Street executive who party officials had tapped to run in Fossella’s stead — died suddenly of a heart attack on June 22. Republican officials from the New York City boroughs of Staten Island, which makes up three-quarters of the district’s population, and Brooklyn, which makes up the rest, have thus far failed to agree on their next fill-in candidate.

Okay, maybe that's a slight exaggeration (you might need the whole pie), but you get the point.
That was true -- 10 years ago. But now the Staten Island GOP is at the point where they can't find a single candidate. The one guy they have -- Anastasio -- is actually from Brooklyn and may have trouble even getting on the ballot.
They will of course agree on a candidate and when the candidate is announced and the election race commences this seat will remain Republican. It will not even be close.
We could truly use your optimism as a reality on November 4 throughout the entire U.S.!
Everyone by now should know the major plan of the left is to wage psychological war. By constantly hammering home the message that the Republicans haven’t a chance they hope to depress turnout and win in the only way the can.
Hussein ought to be 15-20 points ahead in the polls with the massive positive coverage he is getting and instead he is essentially even in the only polls that have a history of being somewhat reliable. My take is the Dem primary went on to long and he peaked way to soon. His favorable numbers have been dropping and his fund raising has slowed. I don’t believe the media can simply cover everything up without losing what little is left of their credibility. This is not 2000 or even 2004 when the MSM controlled a large part of what we saw and heard.
There is more then enough to expose this clown for what he is and all of it comes from his own mouth and that of his primary opponent Hillary Clinton.
McCain needs to pick a strong VP and then after the Convention it’s bombs away with the campaign commercials.
John McCain also has a TON of his own problems that he must seriously and successfully deal with, if he is to definitely become the next POTUS, and his problems are separate from the ongoing problems that the Republican Party at every political level also continue to have. Truly electing as many actual conservative candidates into political offices at every political level in ‘08 and beyond should be the main goal of each and every conservative throughout the entire U.S. for always. This country should never have seriously gotten to the point where it’s now on the verge of truly becoming a socialistic country for the long-term!
It is a relative thing. There are Conservatives, Republicans, Republicans who are Conservative and those who are not so conservative or only selectively so.
Then there is Hussein. When looking at Hussein even the most RINO like of the REP comes across as Reaganesque despite the hysterics of some on this forum.
The correct procedure is to begin with electing the Rep we HAVE and at all costs keep the Hussein out of the WH. Once that is accomplished we get to work on the mid terms, moving McCain to the right and looking for his replacement in 2012. This will be job made easier if he chooses a VP that is more aligned with the conservative viewpoint although not radically more. It must be an incrementally managed task and it will work if done properly.
Everything you say will also truly depend upon what the political makeup is of the next Congress in both the House and the Senate. If the Democrats truly have a veto-proof super-majority in both Houses of the next Congress, then socialism will truly prevail on all of the issues, no matter who the next POTUS is. This is why truly trying to elect as many conservatives to as many political offices as humanly possible is so important for both the short-term of the entire country and for the long-term of the entire country. U.S. capitalism may become dead very soon.
If only Vito had chosen to drink Shirley Temples that night. She was a big-time Republican, too!
