BELGRADE, Serbia: Serbian authorities have started a disciplinary procedure against two of its diplomats accused of helping a Serbian college basketball player flee the U.S. after being charged with severely beating a classmate, a radio station reported Monday.

The Serbian Foreign Ministry said it will "be extremely efficient" in solving the case of Miladin Kovacevic, Belgrade's independent B92 radio reported, without providing any details about what it would do.

The 6-foot-9-inch (2.05-meter), 260-pound (118-kilogram) Kovacevic, who was recruited to play basketball for Binghamton University in upstate New York, was arrested after a May 4 fight at a downtown Binghamton bar that left student Bryan Steinhauer near death. Steinhauer, 22, remains in critical condition and has not regained consciousness since the attack.

After several weeks in jail, Kovacevic was released June 6 when his family posted US$100,000 (?63,000) bail. He left the country on June 9.

As a condition of his release, Kovacevic surrendered his Serbian passport, but Schumer said Serbian Deputy Consul Igor Milosevic reportedly furnished Kovacevic with travel documents.

I hope justice is done, but I can't help but notice that this case sure is garnering alot more attention than the multitude of violent crimes committed daily on Americans by immigrants from southern climes. Wonder why.

This took place in my former hometown.

There's been almost daily stories on it in the local paper - Press & Sun-Bulletin, which one can find if they go to PressConnects.com (it's a Gannett paper, can't remember if it's allowed to link there or not anymore).

There’s a lot more to this than what we’ve seen the moronic media here...before passing judgment people need to just withhold judgment and see.

“because Serbia=bad in LSM speak.”

Diplomatic misconduct like this IS news, but if it were to happen at a mexican consulate, would we even ever hear about it?

You are right, Serbia = Bad (and has for 10 years+) in the media.

That’s sad, but true. The mainstream media hate the Serbs, in spite of the fact that most, if not all, Serbs sided with the Allies in both World War I and World War II. Hitler hated them, because they protested against the treaty that Prince Paul signed with Germany. He also hated the Serbs because they were not part of what he called the Aryan race.

It’s not hard to find modern-day Nazis who still hate the Serbs, even here on Free Republic, sadly enough.

Someone must have been asleep at the switch to allow some truth about the Serbs to slip out.

“It’s not hard to find modern-day Nazis who still hate the Serbs, even here on Free Republic, sadly enough.”

and you pinged me to call me a Nazi? Since you started this: How about bringing that “Serb brute” and “Serb thug” back in US to face justice, along with the Serb official who helped him escape justice? Hero or not in Serbia, Kovacevic needs to US.

“No search for fugitive Serb brute”

“HOW BRUTE LEFT VICTIM FOR DEAD”

FYI: most (real) modern day Nazis actually support Serbia. If you feel others bash you, go in their boards and you will feel loved.

Had you bothered to read the article you linked to, you would have noticed the following...

Hulking hoopster Miladin Kovacevic, 20, is living without fear of capture because U.S. authorities have not filed formal requests, American and Serbian officials said Monday.

...

Federal authorities [US] have not yet completed the documents necessary to spur a Serbian manhunt, a U.S. Embassy official said.

You also write about bringing the Serb official to justice for helping him escape.

As I mentioned above... had you bothered to read the article you linked to, you would have also noticed the following...

A disciplinary hearing for Igor Milosevic, the vice consul who gave Kovacevic a new passport, began in the Serbian capital Monday and is likely to result in his firing, an official said. Milosevic may also face criminal charges.

I read the other article where its lawyer said that it’s impossible due to the law to extradite him. Others said maybe they’ll find a loophole. I am glad the pressure got the diplomat fired. Jail should be next.

Bonly's brain cannot accept the portrayal of Serbs in anything but the most negative light, the poor demented child.

According to police, Kovacevic was at the bar with friends when Steinhauer danced with one of the their girlfriends. Witnesses told police the men exchanged words. At least one account had Steinhauer inexplicably sucker-punching Kovacevic in the back of the head. After knocking Steinhauer unconscious, Kovacevic is accused of repeatedly kicking him in the head, police said.
