One might recall that as late as 1976 much of the old Confederacy went for a liberal Democrat—who was running against a “moderate” Republican.
All of the ‘old Confederacy’ went for Jimmy Carter in 1976, except for the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Old Dominion electoral track record is that Virginia has voted for the Republican Presidential candidate since 1952, with the sole exception being the 1964 LBJvsGoldwater blowout.
Virginia will side with Republican McCain in 2008.
