Schwarzenegger says feeding oil addiction no answer

MIAMI (Reuters) - Republican California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said on Friday that politicians who suggest that lifting a ban on offshore oil drilling would ease rising fuel prices in the United States were "blowing smoke."

The comments were seen by the U.S. media as a slap at Republican leaders including President George W. Bush and the party's presumptive presidential nominee John McCain, who have recently spoken in favor of more offshore drilling as America tries to wean itself from its dependence on foreign oil.

A spokesman for the governor, however, said the comments were not directed at McCain, nor at Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, who has backed McCain's stance on offshore drilling.

Rising oil prices and record-high $4-a-gallon gasoline and their impact on the faltering U.S. economy have put energy concerns squarely at the center of the contest between McCain and Democrat Barack Obama in November.

Speaking at a climate change gathering of politicians and business leaders hosted by fellow Republican Crist, Schwarzenegger said politicians have been "throwing around all kinds of ideas in response to the skyrocketing energy crisis, from rethinking nuclear power to pushing biofuels and more renewables and ending the ban on offshore drilling."

"Anyone who tells you that this will bring down our gas prices immediately or any time soon is blowing smoke," he said. "America is so addicted to oil it will take us years to wean ourselves from it and to look for new ways to feed our addiction is not the answer."

...

ENERGY PLAN

McCain has embraced offshore drilling in recent days and proposed a plan to build 45 new nuclear power plants by 2030. Obama has criticized McCain's drilling stance, and instead has advocated a plan to slap new taxes on oil company profits.

Swartzenegger and the Dems answer is bicycles. No more cars. You really shouldn’t be driving. It’s hurting the environment. Who will be the first to sell his car and fall in line with the radical environmentalists?

Someone please remind me - Schwarzenegger is a Republican in what way? Or is it just the letter next to his name for election convenience?

Isn’t this the same dude who said “don’t be economic girly men” at the 2000 Republican convention?

And isn’t he also the one who promised during the recall election to end the regulations and restrictions that were driving employers from California?”

Maria or somebody has sure turned Arnold into the girly man of all girly men since those days.

And how many years will it take to develop alternative fuels that will work in our cars? Or do we all need to sell our cars, vans, suv’s and wait until the alternative fuels are found and developed? Does anyone see the utter foolishness in this? Let’s get real. We have millions of cars that run on GASOLINE. We need more gas, we do need to conserve and use less but this is our only choice NOW. NOW is when I go to the gas station and pay $4 a gallon. I want relief. I think if we just announce we will start drilling and become energy independent, the speculators will head for the door and prices will start to come down.

It’s ridiculous to call our use of oil an “addiction.” This is sloganeering at its worst. We are not more “addicted” to oil than we are “addicted” to food.

I'd like to ask the dumb ass governor of California if the steroids have damaged any other organs of his body. I'd like to ask the POS if the gas prices effect his vacation plans as they have many Americans. How's business going in your Marxist state Gov. Easy for these government parasites to talk the talk they just aren't really effected in their everyday lives.

Governor Schwarzenegger is an idiot. He’s been listening to his liberal wife too much.

I’m getting sick of politicians acting as though they’ve been elected in order to lord it over the rest of us and tell us how to live our lives. We elect these people to represent us, not tell us what to do.

America has rich oil resources. There are alternative energy sources on the horizon, but that does us little good now. Americans consume as much oil as we do because we are prosperous. Our freedom and our self-dependence has allowed us to prosper in ways that people from other countries can only dream. We categorically rejected early on the concept that an upper-class should be able to hoard the most vital of resources and luxuries to themselves and have always found ways to make them affordable and accessible to everyone.

We have a ton of oil resources that need to be tapped. We need these resources NOW, not later. If new energy resources are just on the horizon, we will certainly have them before our oil runs out. I personally cannot see how we can even manage to develop new power sources if our economy isn’t running at full blast like a well-oiled machine!

These environmentalist arguments boil down to one thing: power. The elites want to hoard resources and luxuries like easy transportation to themselves. At the whole heart of the carbon tax scam is the notion that vital resources should only belong to those whom can more than afford them. They want to raise artificial price controls on these resources so that we “unwashed peasants” can’t afford them. These people, while claiming to be liberals, really have a special sort of contempt for the very everyday common people they claim to champion.

I sure am glad that Governor Schwartzenegger isn’t an American citizen. I’d hate to see what he would do if he suckered the American people into electing him as president.

Where are all the FReepers who were such HUGE supporters of this Liberal meathead back in 2003 & 2006...

the silence is deafening!

why with enough oil & natural gas production and & nuclear power generating electricity, CA could be the energy supplier for all the Americas! And Californians could be receiving royalty checks every year just like the folks in AK!
